It's simple, the more air it let's through the more particles will also pass. You can't have both. In reality, performance filters are about the trade-off between protection and performance.
If you want ultimate performance just completely remove the filter, if you want to race in the desert, maybe install more than just one filter. Best thing for a daily driven car would be the filter she came with from factory, it was tested in all environments already by people that know what they're doing.

Interesting tidbit, the custom car being tuned for the BMWCCA raffle is being fitted with BMC drop in filters. They like the quality of this aftermarket product.

That's what I run in my 4-cyl cars, been very happy with it. 6-cyl cars get Dinan intake w/ their filter.

Replaced my BMS intake with a K&N drop-in and have been very happy; no more rough startups and now, lower IATs.
