Just came across this on BMWs website. Idk if this is new or a mistake on their website, but until I saw this, I thought the M performance LSD wasn't available for Xdrive models. Wasn't even an option that popped up on their website.

I know the new M340 Xdrive comes with an LSD, so maybe adapted from that if it's the same system?

What are the benefits of adding an LSD to a car equipped with x-drive?

It should help transfer power between the rear wheels if one is slipping more than the other. ESC sort of mimics this through breaking, which really isn't as efficient, or fun. Xdrive only transfers power from the rear to front axel as needed. This is my best understanding anyway.

I'm curious to know more about this too if anyone else wants to chime in here.

It’s on my list to add to my xdrive 240. It will help put power down to the rear wheels, meaning less transferring of power to the front during wheel slip. This will improve cornering grip and handling as the car is asking less from the front wheels. It will also mean traction control isn’t needed as much during go go fast time since the wheels will mechanically transfer power before brake intervention tries to slow one down. I’m a fan of grip.

thanks for the info! will this also help to lessen the wear on the front tires or distribute the wear out more evenly? it seems on my previous m235i xdrive and now on my m240i xdrive, the fronts wear faster than the rears.

... probably not. If anything it will just speed up the wearing of the rear tires. So... yay?

well that might at least even out the wear more. the weird thing is that the xdrive on the m235/240 is supposed to be rear wheel drive biased even more so than most other bimmers I believe (I remember reading something like this when the m235i xdrive first came out). because of this it really surprised me that the fronts wear a bit faster than the rears or at least that's what I've experienced.

My 2002 WRX came with a rear limited slip from the factory, so others apparently see the value of LSD in a all-wheel drive car.

Audi also sells an LSD on their S and RS cars.

If you are interested I have a 33-10-8-659-989 with 50 miles on it that I installed on my M235i and later found out I needed the 33-10-8-659-987 which I subsequently installed. And I am in New Jersey. I just haven't had time to post it For Sale yet. If you are interested, or anyone else, send me a PM and we figure out something that works. I can also arrange to have it installed if you would want that.

My M235i is not x-drive but the LSD has made a very noticeable difference. I am happy I did this install even with getting the wrong one and having to install it twice.
