Update 9/13/19*** problem solved!!!
The rumbling noise I was getting was not normal. The drive shaft bearing housing was installed upside down, throwing the alignment of the driveshaft off by a few millimeters causing that rumbling noise. Original post 👇 Finally got the m performance LSD installed on my 2014 m235i. LSD had fluid that leaked onto the box it came in. Shop cleaned it up and didn't really see any issues so they went ahead with install. After install fluid was added and the 20 figure 8s at idle speed in either direction were completed. Then per BMW recommendation I've been taking it easy on the car and plan to do so for the first 500 miles. Unfortunately I'm getting a chatter or vibration that is seemingly coming from the LSD only on acceleration in 1st gear from 2.5k-3k rpms on heavier acceleration (talking about when the car is going straight or turning). Any thoughts on what this could be? Normal during break in? Should I change the fluid? Please help ripping out my hair over here |

You need to do figure 8s under load, not coasting. The chattering can be pretty normal in tight turns and under heavy load if the wheels are trying to spin (i.e., the LSD is working) in a high torque multiplication gear like 1st, especially when the unit is new. It took probably a week for my MP LSD to settle down and after about 200 miles it was smooth and no longer chattering. It's a high quality piece that definitely takes time to break in.

Yeah, 1st gear, not in neutral, and touching the accelerator enough to keep the rpms up enough to put some load on the LSD. I'm talking 5 to 10mph. You will get dizzy. LOL. You don't have to do 20 in row. You can take a break.

Just drive it normally. I didn't bother to do the figure 8s and drove it normally for 1,200km careful not to launch it. I haven't experienced any chattering and I think it would be wise to have it looked at, maybe it wasn't installed correctly.

How many miles were on your car when you installed?

The shop did look and it seemed like they weren't sure either? Most of my friends that have heard it seem to think it's ok, it's not much but it's there. They're thinking it's part of break in

Yea maybe what I'm hearing is what you are saying you hear with yours? It's only at 75% throttle or more in 1st and just between 2.5-3k rpms. Would you say that's around the rpm you hear it at?

Definitely not the tires spinning, I've done plenty of that lol. Definitely the LSD, it's hard to describe I wish you guys could just drive it. My friend described it as a slight vibration?

Think that's where I'm at with this, I'll follow up in a month or so and let people know what ends up happening. Hopefully this thread helps someone in the future.

Apologies for the late update but it took me this long to figure it out.
The rumbling noise I was getting was not normal, after the break in period it remained. After a ton of research I (and the wonderful people at Mod Auto) ran into a thread on e90post where someone had the same issue after installing the LSD. The issue for them was the driveshaft bearing housing got flipped upside down during install and got bolted up that way after the install. Apparently it still bolts up upside down but throws it off by a few millimeters, enough to cause this rumbling noise. I took my car back to the shop, they flipped it around and now all noises have disappeared! Hope this helps someone out in the future |
