How many quarts? You buy 7 or 8 each time? Or just two 5-qt jugs?

Just buy 3- 5 qt jugs if they have 3. It wold be less than $75 and will net you 2 oil changes. Thats what i did anyways. Mine took 6.5 qts to middle of the min-max after checking so pretty sure 7 will put me near max

With the Pure Stage 2 upgrade, I switch to Rotella T6 for the additional Zinc and Magnesium protection. So far so good. Lower oil temps vs. the Mobil 1 0W-40 I put in when I had the turbo first installed.

Does anyone use Castrol Edge 5w-40 (black bottle)? I picked some up this weekend and wanted to do an in between change. The problem is, the bottle itself says BMW LL-01 but I'm pretty sure it's a group 3 oil so not actually full synthetic. Even though the bottle says full synthetic!!
How can it be BMW LL-01 while still technically being a dino oil? I thought only full synthetics only had the approval. |

Whatever you choose......stick with the same oil
Different oils have different additive packages that can cause issues....or more NOT cause fewer issues over the life of the motor. If you're going to keep a car for 60k then it doesnt matter to you.... If you intend on keeping the car long term/higher miles then your best bet is to stick with the same oil every OCI |

I'm not sure it's a scam because it is refined further to make the molecules more equal in size.It flows better in cold temps and can with stand much high operating temps. It has definite benefits. But each manufacturer seems to have their own definition of synthetic. BMW oil is made by Shell which brands some of their oil as Pennzoil -made from natural gas. However that makes it different. It must be group three,I would think.

Bmw / Shell / Pennzoil
Platinum Pennzoil Full Synthetic Motor Oil*– With its proprietary PurePlus™ formula, Pennzoil Platinum synthetic motor oils convert natural gas into a mixture that creates cleaner pistons and a smoother functioning engine is their claim. So, they at least share what Base Stocks they use, Group III, not Group IV, so can claim “synthetic” but also focus a lot on additive technology.
. Look at the total package NOT just what base or Grp. Redline is Grp V so why not use that? . BMW oil is a blend of Grp III & IV and is Excellent -- |

Since the turbo swap, I was advised to use something that contained more zinc and phosphorous to provide additional protection given the additional friction and heat demands from the Pure Stage II and the boost (18psi MAX on the street setting, 21psi MAX on the race gas setting).
Upon installing the turbo, I used Mobil 1 since the local joint was out of the Penzzoil and Castrol in the 0W-40 grade. After 1000 miles, I switched to Rotella T6. I'm not sure if it's the 5W-40, but when it's cold, it takes the motor longer to warm up than with the Mobil 1. Your thoughts? |

So far, I've run the BMW 0w-40, 5w-30, Rotella T6 (5w-40), Mobil 1 0w-40, and LiquiMoly 5w-30 Special Tec. It was a noticeable improvement over the Rotella T6 - smoother running engine and the turbo seems to spool quicker.
I was surprised. I ran Rotella T6 exclusively after trying a few different oils in my Evo X and it was great. Going to stick with LiquiMoly. |
