Open Source A/V Integration (Backup Camera)

Folks,

I thought I'd share some work I did over the weekend with my car. As some folks might know, I got a stripper 228i with a lighting package. I didn't want auto tranny but the WAF factor forced its hand (wife acceptance factor).

WAF factor also forced me to do research on a backup camera (why can't people drive with mirrors? oh yeah folks want self driving cars so I don't have to pay attention to my driving. . .i digress.

There are a lot of choices out there, so I took an generic approach to installing a backup camera, which I will call open source.

I call it open source because I want to share the fundementals, but not really the step by step. That way you can decide on the products and do it yourself. By the way alibaba is chock full of devices so between ebay and alibaba you'll have a ton of choices.

I'll be posting pics real soon. So stay tuned.

Bare Back 228i Trunk

I decided it was time to have some quality bare back time with my 228i trunk. After all, to install the camera you have to undress the rear end. I always liked the rear of many things including this bmw. It's among the best rears I have seen since Bangle bungled.

My only complaint is that they cheaped out on the hinge and rubber wire conduit. My e38 740i had the rubber conduit integrated nicely with the hinge. This one is reminiscent of something very close to General Motors.

But hey, this is the rear end baby, and all is well.

Alas, I digress. . .

Tips For Nasty Clips!

If there is something more annoying than an nasty clip, its like having to do the business in the bathroom and coming up empty. Really annoying! Now, luckily I will show you how to "pull out" before the point of no return!

Turn the clip screw counter clockwise while pulling up with a trim puller.

That will teach you, you naughty clip!

Dangling Wires!

If there is anything that ruins the car more than shopping car dents on the door panel, it is messy wiring inside the car.

Most camera kits have dangling wires all over the place, and I don't like it one bit. So here is a secret solution to neat wiring inside your car. There is a wonderful company called Tesa that makes the most intelligent tape to making sure your wiring in nice and tidy. Make sure for any project that you use it.

I've evaluated the wiring on this BMW, and much to my surprise, it is nice and tidy.

Here is a photo of the Tesa tape and the tamed backup camera cable. You can barely tell there is composite video cable, power, and ground on this furry cable.

The Backup Camera

Here the backup camera I selected. Any camera will do. After the all the camera is using an analog composite video signal that will be coverted to a digital signal when it hits your AV interface box.

Here it is, High Definition / SONY SUPER CCD II Backup Camera. Note, do not cut the white wire until you complete the install. In this case, the camera does not display parking lines if the line is not cut. Other cameras, the opposite is true.

Drilling Holes, Oh Where Oh Where Can it Be?

Here's shot from the inside on the drilling location. It's actually easier to drill a hole than to remove the handle and install a new one.

AV Integration Box

Any box will do. You can search ebay, or alibaba, or amazon. The main thing you have to confirm is that the video connector is a 6-pin LVDS fakra connector. If you don't have 6 pins, your hosed.

Here is the AV box I chose. This one appears to have a direct digital HDMI interface for screen mirroring for future use. I am still testing this with a Samsung Allshare, but it doesn't seem to work.

More to come as I test other devices on this direct digital HDMI interface. I also like the idrive controller integration. There is no separate remote needed to change modes.

To solder or Posi-Lock and Tap

I don't want to start another flame war on this eternal argument, so I chose a middle way that is just as effective.

To connect the rear view camera to the AV box, you will need to connect the ground and power to the ground and power of the AV box. The AV box will usually provide power when necessary just like the rear brake light, except in the BMW you might run into a light control module failure.

Lessons learned, make sure the AV box controls power to your camera. Here are the Posi-Locks used to connect the power and ground.

Best of all you can remove it without any trace if you change your mind.

A nest of wires!

To complete the installation, you will need to tap power, ground, can+, and can- from the radio harness. Wow! What rats nest of wires!

Posi tap - What a splice!

I used Posi-Tap to tap power, ground, and canbus. You can add up to 4 wires per tap as needed. The great thing is that if you change your mind, you can remove it, with no damage to the wires. Just a tiny hole in the wire jacket that can be taped.

Here is the result.

This AV box produces dynamic parking lines. Resolution is good, the color is fair. Have fun custom selecting your stuff. The install is easy and you don't have to deal with BMW's low tech, past its prime backup cam technology with no way to expand other video sources.

Wow, nice write up. Couple of questions. How much did this setup cost? Did you have to code anything to get the camera to come on when you put the car in reverse?

The AV Box was $270. There are others that cost less, about $200 on alibaba or ebay, or amazon.

I paid an extra premium on this box to experiment with the HDMI direct digital interface since the ordinary way to display the smartphone to the display is to use an HDMI to composite video signal converter.

I am not a fan of down converting HD signals into composite video to display my smartphone. Unfortunately, so far this has been unsuccessful.

The $200 or less AV/units to the same thing but a little differently. They don't have a direct digital HDMI interface for smartphone mirroring and use a separate remote for switching video input except for the reverse camera that is triggered from the CANBUS. They also are not integrated into the idrive controller. These things may or may not be important to you.

No coding is required as the system taps into CAN BUS signals. It's like a wire tap, listening to the normal flow of data. When it reads reverse, it initiates video switching to display the rear view camera.

As a proverbial man in the middle, the AV box can also send commands directly through canbus from the idrive controller to switch video modes or to adjust options.

Questions on Posi tap Sizes

A fellow enthusiast has asked what size positaps should be used. Here is the answer:

For Canbus us a 22-24 gauge positap. For power and ground an 18 guage positap will work.

this looks great. thanks for sharing.

I checked the AV unit, the manufacturer says that it is compatible only with cic and nbt. does your stripper 228 have a navigation? I'm not sure based on the pic you posted. the reason I'm asking is that I have a 118 with basic idrive w/o nav (hu_entrynav) and I'm thinking about purchasing the same unit, but I'm not sure about compatibility. thanks

I have no navigation and the 6.5" screen. Lost interest in navigation since in LA you cannot drive without Waze on the smartphone. The f22 uses a six pin fakra monitor cable. You need to check how many pins you have since other models may have a 4 pin system. There are plenty of 4 pin fakra backup cameras solutions for bmws too.

I noticed you were using the IW06B-N23 which on their website says it is for the BMW i3. For the 2014 F22 they recommend the IW06B-N, Does your 2016 F22 with the 6.5 inch screen use the IW06B-N23?

I am using the IW06B-N23 with the 6.5" screen. There is no IW06B-N that I am aware of. The i3 BMW uses the same canbus principles used on the F22. Here is a compatibility list:

2 Series 2014-current F22
3 Series 2012-current F30,F31,F34(3GT)

I'm sorry, did you mention where you bought the box from? I can't find it on eBay or Amazon. I see that IndiWork has a store on their site, but the bad english makes me a bit leery of ordering from them should I have any questions.

Totally safe. They use paypal. They are a Korean Company. Jay, who is the Director there, provides support via e-mail in English.

Make sure you shift the language from Korean to English on the website. You can then order it via paypal in the correct US currency.
