After much consideration I've about to ull the trigger on a new wheel and tire set for my 2017 M240i.

I love the VMR 801v as they look so much like the BMW 666 wheels, but coming in at 21 lbs. each, I decided to forgo them.

Going through Tire Rack, I have in my cart a set of 18" OZ Ultraleggera wheels (18.6 lbs ea), TPMS (4) and a set of Michelin Super Sport tires.

Since shedding wheel and rotating weight is my primary concern, this is the lightest combo I could assemble through Tire Rack. The tires get very high marks on their test track and seem to have reasonable thread life for a max performance tire. I average about 3-3500 miles a year on my car, so these should last a good long time for me.

Everything I've read about OZ has been positive too. They have been in the racing wheel business a long time and appear to have a rather large following by the big race teams. the Ultraleggera's are the lightest I could find in my size w/o spending thousand$ per wheel for a pound or three lighter.

Living in Florida w/ excellent roads and no cold weather, this set-up seems to be about perfect.

As stated I like the looks of the VMR 801v more, but the Ultraleggera's are not bad considering the nearly 2 1/2 weight savings per wheel.

Any thoughts?

I really liked the 18x8 Ultraleggeras I had on my Z4M, noticeably lighter than the BMW wheels to impart a slightly better ride and slightly crisper handling. I also used MPSS tyres on that car, with great results on the road, but not too good on the track compared with the extreme performance tyres that I used (Dunlop Direzza Star Spec), but I would pick Bridgestone RE71-R tyres now if doing track days as well as road use. I would pick MP4S tyres now if just for road use, as the MPSS is not quite as up-to-date in its capabilities.

Mine will be exclusively road use and mostly average driving.

Want good wet traction w/ the summer monsoons we have in Florida. Trying to find a highly rated 18" tire that is less than 20 lbs. each has been problematic. Same with wheels less than 18lbs (unless you have very deep pockets).

I really wanted the OZ Ultraleggera but I needed a staggered setup and they only come in 8.

I ended up buying the V801's because I love the look of them so much.
I'm going to live with the weight as it is still lighter than stock.

But since I need staggered if I was going to go with a lighter wheel it would be the APEX ARC-8 .

Conti DWS 225/40/18 comes in at 20.3lbs and the 255/35/18 weighs in at 22.4lbs which is lightweight for a 255. I ran them staggered on my E92 335i and for an A/S, they were great. Nice and quiet too. I'm currently on Michelin Pilot AS3+ and the Conti's were quieter. If you don't need summer UHP's, that would be a good option.

I can second that observation. The Conti DWS are definitely quieter than the Michelin A/S 3+.
My wife's MK6 GTI has a set of DWS on it w/ ~28K on them and they are still quiet!
I wish the A/S 3+ were quieter. I just put a set on my M240i in 235/40 front and 255/35 rear and I'm a little disappointed with the noise level.
Also, in the same size, the DWS are on the narrow end of the spectrum and the A/S 3+ are on the wider end of the spectrum.

They are good looking wheels. The concern I'd have is getting the fitment you are shooting for. What spec for the wheels are you looking at?

For summer, I put the quite similar OZ Leggera HLT BRs on my car with Pilot Super Sports--the same setup you are considering, 18x8s all around. I have been quite happy with this combination. I do mostly city driving on crappy city streets, but I have not had any issues with their getting bent or anything. Also, it is always a pleasure dealing with Tire Rack.

It looks like they have an offset of 40. Up front, that is exactly what I am running along with MPS4S 235x40 tires. The top of the tire sits inside the fender lip with no rubbing at all even on Dinan springs/bump stops.

In the rear I'm running 265x35 with et 50. It is pretty flush with that spec on Dinan springs. Running 18x8 et 40 will be pretty close to that- the rim 3mm inside that spec and a 265 tire 10mm further outside so you'll get a bit of tire poke. With 255x35 will be 5mm further outside so pretty close.

Thanks for the info and pix. Your car looks great BTW. Those rears do look 'meaty" indeed.

I have to admit, the 17lb 18X8 do appeal to me. Saving another 1.6lbs per corner over the Untraleggera's is nice. However, @ twice the price + shipping then sourcing the tries and TPMS and having to pay again for mounting and balancing, I'm going to have sharpen my pencil and figure which way I want to go on this deal.

The Ultraleggera setup w/ Michelin tires, TPMS balancing and delivery come in a $2007 from Tire Rack. Realizing that pricing difference is small compared to the thousand$ race teams spend to shave unsprung weight. But may be hard for me to justify as a non-racing owner.

I'm surprised that so few wheel manufacturers list the weights of their wheels. I would think that would be one specification they would list at the forefront.

I realize most people buy for the looks rather than weight. I have a buddy that will spend $1000 to gain 8 more HP on his Challenger and then buy 40lb+ Foose chrome wheels for their looks. He may as well put a couple of 300lb cheerleaders in his back seat and then wonder why is 0-60 /1/4 mile time is actually greater than before.

I'm 18x8 squared ET40 with Mich Pilot AS3+ 225/40 front and 245/35 rear and it's pretty much flush. I don't think I'd want to go any further out as I feel they are perfect where they're at.

I agree. I like the conservative fitment myself. You will be good to go with the stock tire spec.

Thanks. I ended up going custom because I couldn’t find a fitment I liked from what I saw being offered at the time. I knew I wanted to go 18x8 fr / 18x9 rear, lowered and 235/265 without rubbing. The folks running the Dinan spec had no issues so I tweaked that spec to what I wanted. The Ultraleggera look like a good option for a conservative, square set-up and a good price. Keep in mind the BC Forged at $2600-$2800 for custom forged wheels is a bargain.

On the weight, I weighed mine myself to verify what I was quoted. But like you said, hard to get that info most of the time. 22 lbs has to be for a bigger wheel. Thats funny about your buddy- the only thing on the weight is that it’s just expensive to get it all, fitment, loser weight and looks, but definitely a huge consideration.
