Beefier wheel/tire combo ?
So I am in desperate need of ditching the weak puny skinny stock wheels on my 18' m240xi. I would like to go with a much beefier and "meaty" set-up but obviously don't want any rubbing. Do 17x9.5 -48 work with a 265/40 square set up? Or perhaps a 18x9 -35 with a 265/40 square set up?
I know the key is to keep offset as close to stock or even higher than with wider wheels. |

What's your suspension setup?
This has been discussed extensively - you should search and read through the various threads dedicated to wheel setups. Quote:

As has been mentioned in the forum before, 245/35-18 or 245/40-17 is the widest square setup you can fit without cutting bodywork, but to fit that size in the front without rubbing requires a 35mm ET and camber plates. The stock struts limit the wheel offset usable due to contact with the tube with wider tyres.
If the need for a wider tyre is for track use, then a proper slick tyre would be a much better choice than a road tyre. The Pirelli P-Zero Slick in 245/645-18 DM (medium compound) or DS (soft compound, ultimate traction, very short life) on a 9" wide wheel would be ideal: https://www.pirelli.com/tires/en-us/...ts-sheet/slick These tyres will require upgraded brakes, at least 2 degrees of camber and stiffer springs to be able to fully exploit their grip. |

In my signature are the details of one example of going wider that works. Camber is -2.6° F and -2.2° R; at 9,073 miles I still had 6/32nds left on the original MPSS tires. Further details in my build thread: https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show....php?t=1532418. This is what the car looks like:

Most of the time, these "will they fit" threads fail to mention what your suspension plans are. Are you going to use camber plates? because no one has successfully fit 265 anything up front without camber plates. Assuming you do get camber plates then we can start looking at your specified offsets. 17x9.5 ET48 265/40 This will work fine in the rear at stock height and maybe even lowered since the diameter is equivalent to 18x9.5 265/35 (I run this in the rear at ET48 and it's flush). However, if you run a wide 265 tire like RE71, R888 etc, you'll probably want to run around -2.0 to -2.2 camber in the rear. For a 9.5 265 (and this is documented pretty well here if you search) to fit up front you'll need around ET25-30. You either get this by buying a wheel close to that offset and have mismatched offsets front and rear (because anything lower than ET45 will poke out back), or you run as large of a spacer as you need to. After you've cleared the strut you need to run -2.5 at a minimum depending on what tire you run. Most hardcore track guys are running -3.0 +. 18x9 ET35 265/40 So now that we know that 9.5 ET45 - ET50 is probably a sweet spot for the rear. You can use willtheyfit.com to figure out how much further out this and any other setups will fit. Aside from the fact you should run a 35 side wall, this will poke out 6.7mm further than an 9.5 ET48. The fronts on the other hand, could work - using willtheyfit.com the minimum you need to clear the strut is an 8.5 ET45 wheel (also documented that this requires about a 3mm spacer minimum to work). So as long as whatever front wheel you plug in is further out than 8.5 ET45, you've cleared the strut. The second problem is the fender - 265 will be a fat tire up front and require at least a -2.5. All of the actual aggressive setups on forums are for those dedicated to the track. Anthony235 's setup was probably the closest to being a true rotatable square setup at 9.5 ET45 with 255/35 RE71s (which run almost like a 265). He ran a 20mm spacer up front. capt_and ran a 9.5 265 square track setup but different offsets front and rear (ET30 and ET53 after spacers). Ran -3.5 up front. The few 255 square setups I know off the top of my head are Scubadriver and Liquidpaper both running 8.5 wheels. This kind of contradicts perfectly streetable because you'll wear out your tires quickly running high camber (to clear the fender under compression) unless you're tracking enough to wear them in. ApexRaceParts has a great guide and even they recommend the max square width of 18x9 ET42 255/35 (with spacers up front). https://support.apexraceparts.com/hc...-Fitment-Guide ^this is probably the closest you get to an aggressive / streetable setup. |
