N55 Strange Rattle Sound From Passenger Side *Seems Top-End
So, some things. I bought my 2016 M235i xDrive with 83,000 miles about two months ago. It has about 85,000 miles. Drives perfectly, no leaks of any kind or oil consumption in those 2,000 miles I've driven. Engine and transmission function normally and pretty healthily. I'm not sure if this has been going on since I got it, or if I just noticed it, but on a cold start-up, there is a distinct ticking (knocking?) from the top-end of the passenger side. After the car warms up, this sound disappears.
However, when I hold the RPMs at around 2,000, there's this rattle sound from that same general area. Almost sounds like something is lose or even like an exhaust rattle. Once I enter 3,000 RPM, the sound disappears. Very strange. Seriously hoping the culprit is not rod bearings. I uploaded three videos: first is that rattling sound when revving the engine. https://youtube.com/shorts/6_xksQytels?feature=share - Video of the Rattle under Load https://youtube.com/shorts/MbBoDSCTHso - Of the Ticking When Engine is Cold https://youtube.com/shorts/pfTPPua1wqE?feature=share - Of the engine after fully warmed up |

Under Load
It only sounds funky under load, the other two runs sound normal to me. Could be an exhaust shield?

Seems unlikely to be rod bearings in a 2016 without other symptoms like oil loss or poor acceleration.

First and 3rd videos sound somewhat normal to me, but in your second video while the engine is cold it sounds like the exhaust cam carrier tick that they talk about in this thread. That tick tends to go away after warm up, at least until it gets really bad, then it doesn't go away after warmup any more.

Here's another really good link regarding the exhaust cam carrier tick - BMW knows about it:
