Aggressive Street / Mild Track Build

With all the quarantine and craziness going on in the world, I thought I'd finally make my build thread here on 2Addicts. I've owned the car for close to 2 years now so it's about time I've documented the journey.

I'll be updating this original post as more modifications happen.

For starters, I had started my car search in the Spring of 2018. I've grown up around family who were very much in to the Honda / JDM / Import scene, and it probably helped to fuel if not start my love and passion for cars. My first favorite cars being between the 1999 Dodge Viper and the MK4 Supra - probably why I've always had a soft spot for RWD Sport Coupes.

After initially starting my search with S2000's, I decided that there wasn't enough power / local roads for me to really enjoy that car in NYC. That added with the fact I'm scared of it being stolen in my neighborhood, the search moved on to German equivalents - the E46 M3 and the E92 M3. While either would've been a great choice, I felt I wasn't prepared / willing to take a chance on subframe or rod bearing issues.

It was the around the same time I had first learned of the existence of the BMW M2, and I immediately fell in love. I hadn't even known of its release in 2016 because newer cars were out of the question for me. I did know however, that it was the most modern car available that was everything I had ever wanted: available in a 6 speed transmission, inline 6 turbo, RWD, 2 door coupe chassis dynamics, and a true driver centric car that wasn't at supercar prices.

Still, the M2 being out of the question in terms of my pricing, I stumbled upon the M235i. After watching countless youtube videos, and considering it came at a fraction of the cost of an M2, the M235i could still have everything I had wanted out of a car, despite not being a full blown M. Seeing as they had the same engine and potential for power, I decided to email the private seller just to feel it out, and a few weeks later I was driving it home.

I became the 3rd owner at 33k miles, drove it back from North Carolina to NYC, and it's been enthusiast owned, driven, maintained ever since.

^Taken after the first week I had the car (it had originally came with VMR 810's and Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+). Fun Fact: I was so excited in ordering parts that the front splitter made it home before I did with the car.

I've come a long way in mods originally starting with a JB+ and the Fabspeed Sport Cat, eventually switching over for the JB4 + BEF when I went FBO, but here what's on the car as it sits now:

2015 BMW M235i (N55)

Interior Color: Coral Red
Transmission: 6 Speed Manual

Diff Fluid replaced at 52k

For me this car has always been about enhancing my experience behind the driver's seat. I'm not chasing lap times (yet), or trying to be the fastest guy from a 40 roll. For me, going out on a nice long cruise on a deserted windy stretch of road where I can be in tune with the car and feel what its telling me through my senses is the best place I can be.

With everything I put into it and still I have planned for it, I probably could have been in an M2 by now. But learning the ins and outs, modifying it, and experiencing all of those changes first hand is rewarding in its own right. Along with all the friends and fellow enthusiasts I’ve met along the way, I have no regrets up to this point.

If you've made it this far, thank you & congratulations! I hope you and your friends and family are staying healthy and safe through this time.

For more pictures you can find me on Instagram @clint.mendoza or on Facebook, as one of the Admins of the BMW M235i / M240i Owners Club.

Thanks for reading!

Haha, thanks! this car definitely requires some serious attention to detail when it comes to wheel specs given its slim fender / strut clearances. But it has all been worth it!

Thanks! I wanted to keep it as visually OEM+ as possible without going full racekar, but the temptations are very hard to resist.

Wow so you're able to fit a 245/40/18 tire in the front with a 10mm spacer?? I for sure thought there would be rubbing issues.

Great job with the M235i!

lol I won't lie, with a 245/40/18 tire and 8.5 wheel, there are rubbing issues up front even with the -2.2 camber and rolled fenders. I was being super ambitious and figure I could dial negative camber to fix it, but the tires are just too tall. It only happens on huge dips or really bad road imperfections / bumps.

I'm considering selling these tires off to get 245/35 or 235/40 all around. It isn't the biggest deal-breaker for me, they're winter tires after-all.

For next winter you may want to swap back to stock brake fluid, at a shop where they can run ISTA to clear/replace the fluid in the ABS system. The Motul is too thick to work properly at winter temps in the ABS (and a good excuse to keep fresh fluid in it). I also swap back to stock pads for winter, mostly to save wear on the track pads.

Hm, I don't recall any loss of feel or performance of the brakes / pedal over the winter, but I'll definitely keep this in mind. Thanks!

I've actually got a friend with ISTA on a laptop so he does all my diagnostics / coding whenever needed.

And the Hawk HPS 5.0 have done a great job as a street pad, I'll have to get some track time either this summer or next and decide what pads to go with from there.

Just wanted to say thanks for this thread being the deciding factor on what wheels to go with for me ha. I have mineral gray, tint, coral red interior as well and was stuck on gunmetal vs silver. Silver for sure after seeing your pics with both! Gunmetal does make a lot of sense for winter though and I'd be going your same route if I had 2 sets.

I was just kidding you. C1X is the paint code for the best looking color in all of the BMW lineup, Sunset Orange Metallic. The color of my 2er!

Haha, it's actually a funny story.

This was taken when the silver EC-7s you see now were originally anthracite.

I originally had the 8.5 / 9.5 EC-7s in Anthracite with 225/255 RE71R's. This was honestly probably my favorite setup because the 225/255 were THICCC bois and looked great with dinan springs and stock camber. I let my dad drive the car after picking up pizza and since my apartment building garage is underground, there's a huge drain grate right before you enter. I told him to stay to the left and cut back in as I normally do to minimize scraping on the front lip, and let's just say he stayed a little too far left and curbed a large portion of the front drivers side rim. So, I had all 4 powder coated silver (pretty much indistinguishable from Apex's Race Silver - I did a side by side against another friend) and swapped to the 235/265 MPS4S at the same time.

I had a friend sell me his Anthracite EC-7s for a great price so I picked them up in a 8.5 square setup for winter wheels.

The future plan after Ohlins R&T is to mount 9.5 ET43's up front and play with the spacers to make them fit with 255/35 MPS4s.

Haha, while I agree Sunset Orange is a beautiful color, I'd have to disagree and say San Marino blue is BMW's best looking color of course with Mineral Grey being a close second
