Would you be concerned about part of a brake pad wiggling?
I bought EBC Red Stuff pads and the right silver part in the picture wiggles. Would that bother you?

Ok, I didn’t know if those were connection points with the caliper that might fail. Thanks for helping me out.

Not that this isn't a great place to get advice, but next time you have a question like 'are my new brake parts safe' it would be much better to take it up with either the people who sold you the parts, or somebody who installs them for a living. I've had great luck w/ Zeckhausen Racing, but there are a lot of resources.

The silver parts are vibration dampers. Many performance pads don't have them at all.
Mechanically it won't hurt anything if the weight wiggles. (Unless it's so loose it could fall off and jam something.) But it won't do its job if it wiggles either. It won't couple its mass to the pad to dampen vibration. It will just vibrate on its own frequency and add noise. I would say it's marginally defective. If you haven't installed them, I'd ask for a replacement. |

I wanted to update this post. I ended up having the pads installed after my mechanic looked at them and said they were fine. There is no vibration from them. They feel very good. I only have 300 miles on them and so I can’t comment yet on how strong they are, although I don’t think they’re as good as the OEM pads. They do seem to have less dust (and easier to clean dust).

I actually ended up popping these off on the rears after my last pad change. The vibration dampers were scraping the inside of my rims. As others have said, a lot of performance and track pads don't have these, and I haven't experienced any negative effects from removing them.
