Dinan intake update

Ok, I finally got the Dinan intake I ordered and installed it over the weekend. I wanted to give a fair impression of my overall experience with the order, the install, and my driving impressions.

I originally posted about my intake order and my disappointment with the ever-moving estimated ship date that was impossible to nail down. After paying for the product, the ship date seemed to change at the last second, only to add another several weeks to the wait. However, kudos to the Dinan rep on this site for taking the initiative to reach out to me and keep me informed of everything that was happening behind the scenes. Not only did they keep me up-to-date, but they also gave me insight about some of the supplier challenges and shipping issues they've been dealing with. Communication goes a long way and they still have some work to do. But I really appreciated the effort.

Now for the install. I made the job a lot harder than it needed to be. I'm an experienced wrencher, but I ended up making the poorest of decisions. I decided to follow the directions, but mentally reference things that were discussed about this install on the forums. What I remembered was, the lower tube hose clamp is impossible to get to (it is) so you want to assemble the new intake backwards from the directions. But, what I didn't remember is that the Dinan instructions list a few incorrect sizes for some of the fasteners. After removing the lower airbox to gain access to the tough, front-facing hose clamp nut, I proceed to use every variation of 6mm wrench, socket, specialty tool, etc...to remove it. I even tested them against the upper hose clamp, to which they so easily went on. After fighting with the lower one for 20-30 minutes, I finally tried a 7mm and had it off in no time. Boo, I should have known better. Additionally, building the intake from the turbo inlet up does help with accessing the hose clamps. However, if you go this route, I recommend test fitting the upper intake pipe and box before you tighten things down. There isn't a lot of movement with the unit once it's tightened and, if you don't line it up perfectly, you won't be able to get the upper box fastened down. Lastly, that last clamp on the engine side of the box is impossible to get to if you install backwards of the directions. It probably isn't needed, but good luck if you try.

My overall driving impression is the throttle is definitely more sensitive, with noticeable benefits in the mid-higher RPM band. I already had the Dinantronics Elite V2 installed, and the addition of the intake seems to make it even more lively. I didn't notice much of a different in sound, unlike many folks. Then again, I haven't changed the downpipe or exhaust either. I plan to take a couple of spirited runs with the Dragy to see if it makes any difference with the 0-60 times; I'll report back.

Summary:

The Good:
Noticeable increase in performance on top of the V2 tune
Looks sharp in the engine bay
Follow up communication was top-notch once the forum rep took over

The Bad:
The instructions could use some help with getting the correct sizes
Ironing out merger pains, supplier challenges, etc...

I know some folks have had great experiences with Dinan, some haven't been as lucky. It seems to have been a tough transition for Dinan and COVID certainly hasn't helped. I hope they continue to weather the storm and iron out some of the rough edges in the coming months. I still believe they make a quality product that fills a segment of users that don't need the most peak hp/tq, but want a little more reliable fun than stock.

Just my two cents

Thanks for this. I'll take your installation notes with me when I have mine installed by the shop.

I too have the V2, so I'm looking forward to any performance data you can provide.

Hey Throttle, thanks for the write-up! Is this thing made of legit CF or is it just one of those CF coating or whatnot?

No. Its legit. I plan on getting out in the next few days for some Dragy results. I don't expect a huge lift over the tune, but I might pick up a tenth 0-60.

The CF looks cool although I'm hesitant to get one because it might turn yellow over time.

Any updates on numbers? Curious since I'm running similar to your car, a m240i xDrive, Dinan intake, Dinan elite v2. Unsure if added anything else like exhaust (I have a MPE also).

The intake is going to give you consistency not really better numbers. I haven't seen any real evidence that the intake is going to offer much in form of power that translates to better time.

From the dynos I have seen, the intake does give you an additional 5-8 whp. It's not a major increase so most won't even feel the difference

That's why it's considered a cosmetic and sound mod

Correct. I should have probably said the shown gains are nominal to be more clear. Thanks for noting that.

I have the Dinan now and though it looks great and probably helps here a little in the Texas heat I miss the whoosh from the AP intake! Might consider getting one to keep on hand for the cooler season.

What is the price on this intake and does it still maintain the warranty if DIY installed?

I've done just a couple of runs with the Dinantronics Elite V2 and intake. I've had a few invalids in the low 3.7s (satellite issues or something), but this one was valid. It seems to be consistently in this range.

I've been working on getting an exhaust, but want to keep it within reason. It's a DD and decided I would rather have the reliability vs. max hp/tq numbers. I'm guessing I fit into the crowd Dinan is going after, since there are other options with much bigger gains.

I may go to the flash tune once my warranty is up.

Yes, the Dragy results were not statistically significant. Maybe a tenth 0-60, but its within the magin of error for conditions etc...it does feel a bit more ambitious in the mid-rpm range. It would have been more interesting to see 1/4 mile traps for before and after. I just haven't had the opportunity.

Your setup sounds devastating.
