Cleanest aftermarket downpipe?

My plans are for, at a minimum, a downpipe and a tune for my M240i. I'd actually like to keep the exhaust relatively clean, not just because of the smell, but because I'd genuinely like to try to meet air pollution standards.

I know it's trade off (added power versus emissions) and I know data are limited, but are there power friendly catted downpipes that tend to be cleaner when compared to others? I could obviously stick with stock, but I'd like to pick up a bit of extra power and maximize what I can get out of a tune.

Thanks in advance.

Same boat as you are doc. I hate the smell, and the damn pollution. Plus mine is a cabriolet so, again, the smell!

You have very few choices actually; two and a half, to be exact. However they are expensive to the tune of 4 times the price of a normal catted DP. These DP meets Euro 6 emission standards and all use the same HJS 300 cell catalyst

First one is this guy from Fabspeed (this is NOT produced by Fabspeed but by HJS; Fabspeed is just the importer; same DP is available at x-ph.com):

https://www.fabspeed.com/bmw-m140i-m...rter-downpipe/

Second is this one from Akrapovic:

https://www.akrapovic.com/en/car/pro...38;yearId=5051

Third is a Wagner offering:

https://x-ph.com/wagner-tuning-downp...ngine-hjs-ece/

All three are available from x-ph.com. I would go with either one of the top two.

EDIT: I went with Akrapovic. The name carries weight. My second choice was Fabspeed. I honestly don't care for Wagner.

Quite helpful. I think in your list probably resides what I will ultimately go with. I'm sure, however, I will make it a long and tortured decision.

Hopefully whatever I choose, it will por well with a tune. The tune will also be a painful decision.

It is between Akrapovic (~$1800) which uses the HJS 300 cell cat, and the one made by HJS (~$1600) themselves which uses their own 300 cell cat (again, imported by Fabspeed). Both are made in Europe somewhere and are the only options I see which are easily attainable in the US compliant with the cleaner Euro6 standards.

Forget I mentioned Wagner. I'd rather trust a European made downpipe if the idea is to buy one which adheres to Euro standards. However, though Wagner is made in the US, they use the same HJS 300 cell cat as the above.

Honestly, Akrapovic because I trust the name.

As for the tune, you only have just one option doc: the BM3 platform, and then having someone like Cary Jordan to custom tune your car. Getting a *custom* tune is key! At that point the platform, like BM3 and MHD, becomes irrelevant. If you are getting a custom tune vs an Off-the-shelf (OTS) platform specific tune, the interface and UX determines the platform, and NOTHING beats Bootmod3 (BM3).

Go for it. You have two downpipes to pick from and only one platform to go. As for custom tuning Cary Jordan is the most recommended, and in fact the most popular due to that.

Edit: with the downpipe, custom tune, BM3, and installation, you are looking at ~$3500

Fabspeed and Active autowerkes neither throws CEL (some others don't but they guarantee)

Fabspeed slightly better quality and different cell. If $$ is concern, AA has great reviews from a few folks putting on here.

I went AA since I need no CEL for Virginia emissions, and had coated in Cerakote. the T304 stainless is fine, but filler metal for welding (cant be) is not, so I added. Mine going in next week, heard a good fit too.

I'm in Virginia as well and have the same practical concerns. I had a modded 370Z with high flow cats that turned into a booger of a problem.

Fabspeed and AA are two different beasts altogether.

The Fabspeed is a 300 CEL HJS cat; given the gains listed on Akrapovic site (which uses the same 300 CEL HJS cat) you are looking at very efficient downpipe despite meeting the Euro6 emission standards! There is no smell, and no "check engine light" (also abbreviated as CEL in these conversations for some stupid reason). No wonder this is expensive at ~$1600

The AA *catted* is a 200 CEL sport cat; there is a bit of smell and a bit of sound (note that AA also makes a catless version of this as well which the OP will not want). They guarantee no "check engine light" but whatever. The smell just puts me off, though it will be far less than catless. I don't want to be driving in a stinking go kart. No wonder this is not so expensive at ~$400

For OP Euro6 compliant DPs make sense, unless he wants to live with the slightly greyer (and smellier) territory of sport cats (catted) which all tend to have 200 CEL cats.

Very interesting!! They don't list the CEL on for the catted version on their site BUT they do say that the B58 will throw a Check Engine Light if their "software upgrade" is not used. Is it their custom tune? Is it compatible with a custom tune off BM3? I have never seen "software upgrade" for a downpipe before.

I do know that there is no check engine light with the Euro6 compliant pipes.

EDIT: AA does have an expensive $1000 catted DP. No software requirements on that one. Got the answer, was looking at the wrong one.

Do you have any other exhaust work on your car? I have the remus non resonated catback and am wondering how much louder the AA catted downpipe will make my car.

I have the Remus resonated cat back on my car. It's not bad at all - of course the non res cat back will be louder. Based on my previous exhaust (AWE) which I loved, but was too loud after the downpipe, the loudness increased by about 30-40%.. your experience will differ. However there is no denying the turbo does spool faster after the downpipe.

Shameless plug - Remus exhaust and AA downpipe brought to you by Extreme Powerhouse!

There is no smell, and biggest difference between Fab and AA is cell and a slight edge to Fab for metal used. For my daily/light track use, and having coated, AA is good.

I had to have no CEL, so I put $500 over Fab to short shifter.

Oh yes! I saw your post yesterday about getting your AA DP coated? Was there a reason for that?

I have Akrapovic on the way.

Its also good for heat

(if not keeping car or running hard, not necc. but I'm hoping to do both...and for $135, worth the add to me, go black or metal color)

If a motorsport-level ceramic coating is of interest, take a look at Swaintech Coating's White Lightning product: https://swaintech.com/race-coatings/...aust-coatings/

Instead of a high-temp paint with some ceramic material in it, it's a thick ceramic layer. It's not about aesthetics, but it is paintable. I used it on one of my race cars' headers to help keep underhood temps down. The stuff works.

I once tested it twenty minutes after three dyno pulls on a turbo'd AWD street/performance car. I put my hand on the turbo, and it was only very warm. That was my first test of the product, and it surprised me. That car had White Lightning from the headers to the exhaust tips – but then I was more hardcore in those days.

P.S. The stuff's affordable – it's not crazy.

Does meeting Euro 6 emission standards mean it'll pass Oregon deq?

You shouldn't have any problems passing. Keep in mind, there are maximum thresholds that accommodate much older, "worn" cars and a brand-new 300 cell cat is going to suck up more particulates than some of those 10-20 year old OEM cats. Euro 6 isn't as stringent as CARB in some ways, but it's almost identical in others.
