Will there be after-market LSDs for a fraction of the cost? How well would these perform compared to a stock LSD?

I don't think BMW has even offered an LSD as on option on a non-m car since the early 90's.

If it were a $600 option from the factory I would have considered ordering it. At $3000+ dealer or port installed, it's throwing good money away unless you are going to the track. The standard diff and electronic control (via brakes) work pretty good. In stock form it will spin both tires and do a nice drift when pushing it around corners. If lap times aren't a concern, I'd save the $3K for a down payment on a M2.

So it's clear we don't need the LSD (at least not at this price) if we're not tracking it all the time. But what about power mods? Is the LSD going to be necessary to put some 330-350WHP to the ground?

In same camp as many of you all. Had intended to get it, but with steeper price point and my very limited time on track, I pass. Doubt if the ROI would be there later. I have some other things that I will want for it--like powder coating the wheels, upgrading exhaust etc.

If your planning on spending the cash to get 350 whp you might as well spend the 3 grand and get the LSD.

I didn't realize that. That just makes this 3k a ridiculous proposition for something that should come stock on a 50k performance oriented coupe.

350 whp on an n55 on pump gas is best case scenario.

Sounds priced so that it doesn't sell, so it can safely be ditched in the next generation.

Before my M5 and Z4 M coupe (both with LSD as standard) I had a E39 528 and 530 (both manuals) without LSD and felt they handled great during regular driving. Although I have not driven a non-LSD as a DD for almost 10 years, to me (if I order a 235) it's not worth it for DD duties. If I wanted to track the car, I would consider it. I'm already torn between a 235 and F80 M3, and adding to LSD to my 235 build would make me just get the M3 for sure.

BMW sees how much all of us enthusiasts "need" that LSD and jack up the price. They figure the markup will be worth losing a few customers who would otherwise buy it at a lower price. As someone who was on the fence about the LSD and was waiting for pricing to be released, I will NOT be paying such a ridiculously marked up price for something that should have been standard in the first place. I think the poll results speak for themselves, and the fact that the majority of us will be passing on paying for this overpriced LSD will hopefully speak even louder to BMW.

It's hardly a "jacked up" price. £2k fitted, the quaife one is about £1500 and you don't get bmw warranty.

I don't know why everyone assumes that price is outrageous. It could wind up being silly stupid, depending on the type and the production quality, but I doubt it would be a let down. That price point slots it in as a Quaife competitor, along with a not all that surprising, but not too bad, OEM brand tax added on.

Seriously, though. Once you take into account labor paid for it to be installed by a mechanic with a good reputation, the Q LSD for the 135i and whatnot is actually not much cheaper. Granted, many would like to avoid labor costs entirely, but I doubt BMW wants to sort through the mess and miss out on the profit.

And for those of you who have mentioned how it won't see the track often enough to justify the price... You realize that, done properly, a LSD will pretty much make a difference in all manner of spirited driving - quick starts, freeway pulls, canyon carving, etc. An open diff is obnoxious in many instances - one of them being how much power you realized was being lost without the LSD mounted.

Plus it's generally safer, and makes handling hiccups easier to predict.

Maybe it will be cheaper when we buy LSD from http://www.drexler-motorsport.com.au/products.html :-) without margin for BMW :-)

I would really like to hear from those that put the quaife LSD in their car and how much of a difference they feel on a daily driving basis. Also this should be less expensive because it's an easier install into an existing housing versus replacing the whole rear end as required on the E90
