As the owner of an M235i, I suspect he is worried about confusion between M235i coupes and convertibles with 6 cylinders with rear wheel bias, etc. vs the Gran Coupe with 4 cylinders and front wheel bias. Really it's only an issue if you're selling or buying, but to some I could understand the Gran Coupe as it's named might reduce the cache' of the "original" M235. BMW does itself no favors with their current naming schemes.

Whose confusion worries us? The dealer at trade-in time? A potential buyer? The door count is fairly obvious and I cannot see how a transaction would be completed with such a misunderstanding prevailing. I still don't see how the name of another car affects a prior one. This is similar to some Mustang buyers being distressed because the new Ford BEV is named Mustang Mach E....how on earth does that change what they already have?

I don't think that the name is going to cause any confusion for buyers because it's pretty obvious when one car has two doors and the other car has four doors and they look entirely different from each other. However, I do think it's annoying that it is considered a 2 series because it really should be a 1 Series Gran Coupe.

The 4 should be a 3GC too, it's all confusing and silly.

Let's come at this a different way. Nothing can annoy a person. A person can choose to be annoyed or not. I'm not sure why anyone would want to choose to be annoyed...detracts from the quality of daily life.

You are a true Zen master if you don't get annoyed. However, without annoyance, people would not be motivated to advocate for change.

Fair - I suppose I prefer the Audi Sportback monicker. This whole 4-door coupe naming thing never appealed to me.

Just FYI, it's not "front wheel bias" or "rear wheel bias", it's front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Unless its an x-drive or AWD, there is no "bias" involved. That said, the 4GC is based on the Mini transverse-engine platform, same as the X1 and X2 SAVs. That platform is significantly smaller than the current 2-series (mostly narrower), particularly the interior. Having driven those two vehicles, my wife's '16 228i feels a lot roomier. Nothing wrong with the Mini and its platform, just sad that they chose to "demote" the 4GC to a very un-traditional (for BMW) layout.

Yes, we must all vote....

But, the name of a car is not worth the cortisol for me so my response to the thread title is (cue the music)....Let It Go!

I went to the 'unveiling' and made a point of telling the rep that I was bugged by the name grab. You all know the look he gave me, just about like if I'd asked if it had RFT's or DCT vs. auto - pleasantly blank and 'helpful'.

To be fair, If I had a mustang, I’d be annoyed by the Mach-E.

How is your reaction possibly connected to "fairness"?

Let's say the top kid in the class, the best athlete, the best grades, tall and attractive, is named John Smith. Somehow, "fairness" allows him to be annoyed that another set of parents named another kid, short, unattractive, and less skilled in all things, "John"? That, somehow, diminishes the star pupil, and that has some connection to being "fair"?

“To be fair” is an expression here in the US. It’s referring to the other posters who are bothered by the M235i name or mustang owners who might be bugged by the Mach e.

Here’s the long version of the point I was trying to make:

I know being unhappy about name sharing is sort of illogical, but to be fair to M235i and Mustang owners who have to deal with this, I too would feel slightly unhappy, despite the fact that my unhappiness is not based on logic.

Make more sense now?
