Question Wheels and Tires for F22 M240i

Hi, friends. New M240i owner and forum member here. I have the staggered wheels setup, and as you might expect my rears are wearing twice as fast as the fronts. Also, I find the tire noise a bit loud on the car. So, as I ponder my coming tire replacements I have a few questions for you experienced folks:

1) I'm wondering if I should move to the same wheel size all around so I have more tire choices. If so, what do I need to know about wheel sizing and fitment?

2) I use my car for enthusiastic daily driving, the occasional mountain road run, and road trips, but I do not track the car. I'd like to find tires that still give me reasonable grip for my usage but are much quieter than the Pilot Super Sports currently on the car. Any suggestions?

Thanks, all. Really appreciate any advice you can offer.

Good questions that perhaps aren’t so easily answered.

But I suspect you may attract a more invested audience over here:

Michelin Pilot Sport All Season 4 tires. They come stock on the C8 Corvette for a reason. They’re pretty darn good at everything. I still have the All Season 3+ which were discontinued but they’ve been able to handle everything I’ve thrown at them, including a track day, 2 New England winters (light snow only), road trip to AL and back to ME. Good sturdy sidewall for an all season so it drives closer to a summer performance tire without the worry of hydroplaning. Of course there are other options but this is just my 2¢. - They are a little noisy but I read that the AS4’s are quieter. I run a square set of 235/40’s despite the slight gearing disadvantage of the taller sidewall.

Edit: seeing as though you’re in an M240i, you might be under-tired in the rear with a 235 width with all that HP. You should be OK running a 245 square setup without modifications to the front at stock ride height but it’s right on the edge of being able to fit. If you have XDrive, the 235 square setup might be plenty. It’s more than enough for my 230 rear wheel horsepower anyway.

I just ditched the factory Pirelli run flats (finally) for a set of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 all seasons just last week on my 235. What a difference in ride quality to the run flats. Hard to go wrong with Michelin.

This is the best tire you can find on the market for all the reasons other posters mentioned. They need to wear evenly so they have to be rotated cross axle at every 3.5K and run on pressure recommended on your door sticker. I keep mine at 38F 45R.

The pressure on the door sticker is for maximum load. Adjust as necessary if you normally drive alone or with a single passenger.

I recently replaced the stock run flats with Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus and have been pretty happy so far. I've driven it in fairly heavy rain without issues. I have AWD so square setup.

Me too, and I love them. Interestingly, tire reviews show that the non run flat Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 AS slightly out performs the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 AS.

I'm on MPS4 with 235 square stance. Will probably move up to 245s when I get wheels

I run a square setup. 95% of the time you wont be pushing the car hard enough to see the difference and at the limit a square setup has neutral handling which is easier to control.

As for tires, pick your poison, do your research and find tires that fit your needs and your budget. if you can run anything from Michelin pilot sports to Nankangs if all you wanna do is burn rubber.

Heres my exact setup: Michelin Pilot Sport A/S+ in 225/40/R18.

once these tires are done tho il be swapping them out for General GMax RSs which in my opinion is a far Superior tire to the popular Indy500s.

I have two sets of wheels/tires. One set is the stock staggered set with 225 front and 245 rears with Michelin PS all seasons. Then my 2nd set is 235 front, 265 rears with Michelin PS4's. I am pleased with both setups. Of course the summer set feels more sticky but no surprise being stickier tires and I'm using them when the roads are a higher temp.

@Mmm Good You're in Colorado? So I wonder if you drive much in the cold/snow (or do you have another car for cold/snow conditions)?

I ask because if you do drive the M240i in the cold/snow over the winter, then it might be worth thinking about separate summers and winters. This allows you to choose a very warm-biased tire for the summer and the converse for the winter, rather than compromising on one that has to cover both seasons. My M235i has had to deal with 35.5° (96°F) this summer and -12°C (9°F) last ski trip, which is a lot to ask of any one tyre and is why I have gone for larger all-out, warm-biased staggered summers (245/35-18) and narrower square winters (225/45-17).

Of course, if you garage it and get into your SUV/4x4 in colder weather, then this might not apply. And if you don't have the space to store the unused set, then it's also not an option.

All-seasons are an option, of course, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who felt they were the right choice for them. All I can say is that for me, as a similar sort of driver to you, and having to handle a fair extreme of summer and winter, they wouldn't work for me as well as separate summers and winters.
