BMW 230i clunking noise

Watch the video at:

When reversing and turning, my 2019 BMW 230i makes this clunking noise (at 4 and 6 seconds) and you can feel how it swerves/vibrates as well at the same time, as if the front wheels jump out of position. It only occurs after the car has been parked. BMW have looked at this many times, but they cannot find the reason for this problem. I think this also occurs sometimes at high speed when turning, resulting in a slightly swaying uncontrolled feeling.

I bought the car new and it has done this since day one. It is really frustrating, does anyone have any ideas?

This video was filmed with my phone which lay on the dashboard.

Update: If you look at the branches above, you can actually see how the car changes direction during the second clunk at 6 seconds. The steering wheel is held in the exact same position throughout the turn.

Hi,

Sorry to hear that you've been having this issue. If you could kindly provide me your VIN I can take a look at BMW's internal system to see what's available as a solution.

Best,
Omer

Thanks Omer. But I am a little reluctant about posting my VIN in an open forum. If it is regarding PUMA cases, BMW here in Sweden say that they have checked but that there are no related cases. I will be happy to provide any information regarding options etc. For example, it has the M-sport package plus VSS and adaptive suspension.

I think this is a normal case of cool weather tire play when reversing after the car has been stationary.

It's more apparent in summer high performance tires when the temps drop close to freezing.

What are the ambient temperature where and when this has been occurring and what model and brand tires do you have ?

It was over 10 degrees celsius at the time of the recording. But it has been occurring all summer even when it was a lot warmer. The swerving has also been verified at a BMW garage, while doing a turn going forward in a parking lot. It would of course be great if this had a simple explanation, but I think maybe not in this case. The tires are Michelin PSS.

I noticed the same thing on my 235i when reversing out of a parking space, or slowly pulling into one- wheel turned sharply in either direction. Had the summer tires on. I recently switched to Michelin all season pilots, and the issue completely went away. So I'm guessing, at least in my case, it was the tire jumping into a new forced position.

My 230i does the same thing upon starting it. I noticed it about a year into owning the car, I think it is a combination of the air rushing out of the exhaust and the tires being forced into a driving position. hobo0933

This is normal when doing a maximum turn when first starting up the car and all the parts are still cold.

It's due to the Ackerman geometry.

Are you on MPSS? I just switched from run flats to pilot super sports. They do the exact same thing. Usually happens at cold weather. For me it feels more like I drove over a small rock.

It would happen with my 2003 E46 upon reversing while turning the steering wheel and transitioning from the driveway to the street. Didn’t happen if I had the steering straight while reversing, only when fully turned. I believe it’s happened once with my current 230i, but I’ve gotten into the habit of straightening the wheel when transitioning onto the street.

EXACT same issue I have! I thought it was some bad strut mounts. I'm still under CPO and was thinking of taking it to the dealer but this only happens when the car is cold! If anyone figures it out..please post!

This is not an issue it's expected due to the Ackerman geometry: https://www.babybmw.net/forum/viewto...erman#p1195880

This has happened to me about a half dozen times over 2 years on my 18 m240i. Backing out with steering wheel almost full lock.
