What Exhaust's Do You Like?
Interested in getting an exhaust, just curious what everyone else Likes/Has haven't found places doing individual 228i specific exhausts...
Mostly 235i Exhausts for 228'ers looking to do conversion! Sooooo... what do you like the sound of the most?! |

I personally love the sound of my active autowerke axleback exhaust. It got even more pleasing when I put in my downpipe. I know supersprint has made an exhaust along with center pipe and resonators for the past year but they're pricey.

I found a used F30 328 MPE and fitted it to my 228. Easy install for any muffler shop. ($90 install) They just have to line up the midpipe to the MPE. It's not brain surgery. Any way, it sounds great and the larger 80mm tips look great. It will have the same sound as the 235 MPE (fitted to the 228). Deep, throaty, burbles. Loud when you get on it, civil the rest of the time. GF was driving behind me and said she could hear it with normal acceleration. (unlike the stock exhaust lol) good luck

I made a few vids but never actually re-recorded them as the sound doesn't really get captured by the shitty camera I filmed with. In person it sounds so much better. |

Stock M235I exhaust with the exhaust mod sounds great.
Here's the mod. Cost was $160 to do the work and sounds just as good if not better than the M-Perf exhaust. http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=819125 Running catless downpipe. Here's also a picture of the internal part of the resonator. Whatever you do don't delete the Resonator, sounds absolutely terrible in this configuration on the N20.

Hi to everyone.
I'm expecting my 228 to arrive in the next few days and I'm searching for a dual (left-right) exhaust. I'm looking for a axle-back or cat-back for start, but it would be nice to have the potential of upgrading the rest (dp, cat) in the future... Is there any brand that I miss with a dual system designed for the 228 (and I mean with the same pipe diameter and not bigger like the M235 MPE or other 235 solutions)...? Thanks |

If this reply goes to my question, I'm in search for a dual (one left one right tip like M235), not a quad (4 tips) exhaust...
I was planing to go with the 235 MPE or another aftermarket dual exhaust but I'm having seconds thoughts about this becasue of the difference in the pipe diameter and how it will affect flow velocity (aka backpressure)... Thus I'm searching if there is a dual exhaust designed for the 228 flow... |

Won't it just be more flow? More flow is good isn't it? |

It might create unwanted turbulence that doesn't help the linear flow velocity... Backpressure is a tricky subject... here is a link that explaines it better than I can... http://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/exhaustbackpressure.html That saying, I'm not an expert either so I cannot know what all those different applications result... for example 235 MPE will widen the 228 diameter in a random axle-back pipe spot... another application will widen from the catalyst etc... Of course I'm not expecting any noticeable gain from the last section of the exhaust, I'm doing it mostly for the sound and the look... But on the other hand I dont want to spend all that money to end up loosing power or braking torque linearity... |

It's been clearly demonstrated elsewhere that the OEM system on both the 228i and the M235 is already relatively clean and uniform, to the point to where power gains are minimal with a catback aftermarket system. One has to do the full shebang -- i.e., replace the downpipe and remove the cat -- to see any noticeable power gain. The narrowing effect is indirectly discussed in the article you linked to, as it relates to his, um, ultimate point: exhaust tips can drastically change the sound of an exhaust. (I have fond memories of my first car, a '74 VW Beetle, with larger tips installed in a stock exhaust. Puppy was throaty!) Larger tips can effect a deeper tone partially caused by the backpressure and velocity of the exhaust gases being siphoned through baffling. Because there's no more piping to be fed to after a tip, the effect works -- and this is essentially what axle-back muffler tuners do to affect a sound change as well. The key to the latter is not altering the size of the piping too much above or too much below the other piping in the system.

The 328i axleback would work, but the mid pipe wouldn't due to vehicle dimensions. We'll actually have a 228i in here within the next few days.
