I run with BMWCCA NCC at Summit point and they straight up don't allow verts. Not sure about pca or other track groups but if you want to go with BMWCCA don't get a vert.

You can get a bolt-in that are made for m2 for around 5200. Not cheap at all. a cage isn't something you cheap out on.

There are plenty of racecar shops that will do this for far less and I'm not sure what your last sentence means...chrome moly tubing installed by a reputable shop is safe, you don't get more safety by handing someone more money!!! I had a 8.50 certified chrome moly full roll cage (not just a hoop and down bars) done in my last drag car for less than $3,000. But again, if there are some out there that will pay 5-10k for the extra "safety" please send them my way!!! |

for any car, not just vert.
And your missing the certification part. Can anyone make a cage, maybe not. Can you figure it out, sure. A cage for my 92 notch was under 1200$ to meet NHRA that was fabricated, painted, everything. For NASA, club racing, IMSA etc its different than NHRA. Not sure why you are arguing. Fabricators can charge what ever they want as long as someone wants to pay.

I am sure that NASA and IMSA have different certs than the NHRA but he wasn't talking about entering that type of completion. And you are correct, anything is worth what anyone is willing to pay, just seems a bit crazy to say a roll bar is $5-10k when you just posted one for $3k and I think even that is inflated. There are plenty of chassis and racecar builders out there that do great work that don't rob people because of the badge on the hood of their car, that is my point. And why is it that every time I post you say I am "arguing". Sorry if I have raced since 1989 and have an opinion. Truly, my apologies... |

This cage wouldn't work for a vert, so he would need custom fabrication. Def would be more money.

4 point cages for drag racing have different requirements than road racing. Drag will be cheaper. I don't think drag bars require a diagonal bar.
The reason some track organizations allow the s2000, boxter, and I think the newer miatias with OEM roll hoops is because they are built from the ground up as convertibles. Meaning they have other structural reinforcement from the factory in those examples. I can speak of the s2000 from personal experience. The roll "hoops" are not just simple 2 point hoops over the back seat. They are bolted to the chassis of the car with diagonal reinforcement. Also the "A" pillar of that car is designed to support the weight of the car if upside down. BMW convertibles have none of that. To my knowledge. As I mentioned in your other thread some shops offer a 4 point cage for the 2 series coupe (Strom Motorsports). I'm sure they use a jig to build the cage. I highly doubt the same jig will work for a convertible. You will need to go to shop and leave the car with them to build one specific for the convertible. Cage for my 370z ~$2k for a 4 point with diagonal bar and harness loops. (if i remember right). A one off cage for you can be twice that ++. If you get a 4 point cage then you loose the back seat; so why not just get a two seat convertible with factory hoops like a boxter or Z4 that some organizations will allow? Or pay up and get a custom cage for the 2 series....or stick to autocross. Pontiac Solstice S2000
