Discontinuation of m240 convertible?
I've been reading online and not sure if this is accurate or if BMW has even made an official statement about it - but is it true that the M240 convertible is being discontinued for 2021 with the new generation upgrade?

I believe that is true. I don’t have a source though.

Yes, it’s true. Neither 230i nor M240i will be available as convertibles for next gen, sourced from San Luis Potosí, Mexico, startling in 2021 calendar year.

Glad I got mine. An instant classic, and one of the best BMWs ever produced. And yeah, it's a stick, too. I'll never sell it. For those of you so inclined, get yours while you can. You can always sell it and probably do very well recouping most of your investment, especially the manuals.

Is there any hard data on the difference in depreciation between manuals and automatics, or coupes and convertibles, that might lead one to make the statement that one could recoup most of their investment in a manual convertible?
Yes, these are very rare birds, but that is in large part because few people want them, new or used. Rarity does not always translate directly to desirability or value. Just curious. Most cars sink in value like stones. The percentage that count as investments is minuscule. I would never advise anyone to buy a car as an investment, at least not a financial investment. |

While depreciation is to be expected, even for a classic that eventually begins to rise again, I think the issue for resale is not so much the value as the marketing. Just as with rare coins, stamps, or art, the number of folks who would pay the presumed value are few, but once they can be found, both parties may well appreciate the vehicle and agree to the suggested price for a rare car. This might entail not spending as much time with CarGurus as with the classifieds for the BMW Car Club of America, or on this forum, for example...and patience.

Point well taken. My question was whether there is any data to support the claim that a 2-series convertible with a manual transmission holds its value more than other 2-ers.
And since the numbers are so small, I would even accept a finding that 6-speed convertibles of all makes and models are overall a better investment than other configurations of the same makes and models. I would restrict the scope to the USA, on the assumption that different cultures value these features differently. For example, I suspect that convertible sales overall in Canada and other parts of the Frozen North are lower than in more temperate climes. I am sure that someone somewhere has access to these figures. |

There are a couple dealers that specialize in finding those rare older BMW's with manual transmissions, you'd be surprised what they ask for them. I saw a 2002 BMW M coupe with 5,000 miles, manual transmission they wanted $125k for. http://enthusiastauto.com/qsearch/?f...4_0=1&x=15&y=7

My friend 'stick is correct. MUCH higher!
But getting back to my post, I'm not suggesting buying a 2er, or any car, as an investment. Nor do I think that the car wouldn't depreciate significantly as soon as ya drive it off the lot. I'm saying that the convertible, and a manual one at that, given the puny take rate, and BMW's likelihood of discontinuing them, will, in the future, be a very desirable car to a BMW enthusiast. That's all. No need to look any deeper than that. My brother, cousin, my friend 'stick, and I, all have manual 2ers. Which is probably about 25% of the 2er manuals this side of the Rockies! |

Very glad we got a 2020 M240i Convertible
with MT last month. The car it replaced was a 2001 VW Cabrio with MT bought lightly used in 2002 (no MT Cabrios made in 2002 and 2002 was the last model year for the Cabrio). That one replaced a 1984 VW Cabriolet with MT. |

I also bought stick, although not convertible. Personally I think more driving oriented enthusiasts would prefer a stiffer chassis. Although you could say the same thing for me, as I didn't go for the sunroof delete.

Thanks for the insight! Just curious if you knew the source of this info? Or if BMW made any official statements about it? Thanks

The 2er convertible is likely just one of many possible discontinued BMW's in the works. Rumors also report the Z4 and 8 series Coupe and Convertible likely won't see successors.

Are we in another valley in the convertible cycle? If few people are buying them, then the manufacturers have little reason to make them. They are beholden to the market, not to some automotive god.
