Question: How good is the rear passenger space if I occasionally need to carry 2 medium size adults on a 2 hour car trip?

Define medium? The biggest problem is height. Imo below 5'10 they should be reasonably comfortable, they are great seats. There obviously isn't much leg room but my buddy drives a mini and it's a 100 times better than that.

I don't think its a problem and I let even tall friends in once a month or so and they don't whine that much. 2 hour trip is a little longer than ideal though. For tall people they will hit their heads on the the roof over bumps unfortunately.

If this is a big deal to you I recomend going and sitting in the back of one some time. I can be picky as my in laws have a CLS which is a pretty big car and I still feel cramped in the back.

I see... Yes they would be about 5'10" or below... mostly highway for two hour trip maybe once a month

The answer depends on how big are the people in the front seat.

If you're 5'8 then they'll probably have no problems at all.

If you're like me and you're 6'4, the answer is "hope they're amputees" because the leg room is basically non-existent.

Well I am 5'11"

I am liking the M235i but I might consider the 340i x-drive (w/THP), just for the extra space... but concerned about the 340i's driving dynamics

Drove with 3 other people 2800 miles cross country. 36 hours straight, no stopping except for food and gas.

They are rarely comfortable. But you need to be below 5'10 in the back, which I am not, and you hopefully not have someone who is 6'3 in the front seat (which I am)

My wife is 5'6" and complained about 1 hour trip when she had to sit back there. She isn't a complainer either.

Two guys who work for me are both over 6' and sit front and back on the same side. Getting in and out is a bit of a hassle but once settled they're fine.

I'm 6' and I can tell you that no one, regardless of how tall they are can sit behind me. The "leg room" is about 3". Even putting a child behind me would require me to adjust my seat to a less than ideal driving position BEM-S4 said he has had two guys, both 6' sitting front and back on the passenger side. I suppose that's possible but the front seat passenger will have his knees against the dash and the rear seat passenger will have his against the seatback. Getting in and out of the back seat also requires a fair amount of agility. It would be an impossible task for anyone with even a moderate leg or back problem. I think you have to look at this car as a two seater with a really nice place in the back to put your jacket, a small suitcase, etc. The back seat on the 2er is no place for two adults for two hours.

My feeling is that anyone who does not like the back seat accomodations in my car is welcome to arrange their own alternate transportation!

That said, on several occasions I drove 4-up in the 228i I have rented in Atlanta (Yeah Sixt!). I'm 6'+, three somewhat shorter passengers were tolerable. The back seat is FAR better than in other sporting coupes like Mustangs and Camaros. As has been mentioned, headroom is more of a problem than legroom, I would say legroom might actually be a tad better than in my e91.

Exactly! And it has more to do with the length of the legs in question than overall height of the person.

thanks for the feedback guys... i might be leaning towards getting a 340xi w/THP, in the interest of more practical space, hope it will be as sporty as a m235xi...

First time I sat in a 2 series, I looked in the back and didn't think there was a chance anyone could sit back there, much less behind me (6'3"). Didn't care enough to climb back there before buying it, but tried it one day and was pleasantly surprised. I barely had enough legroom without adjusting the driver's seat, but I was surprised I had any... headroom was more of an issue, needed at least a couple more inches.

A long road trip might be a bit much, but I thought it was okay... a lot better than it looks.

Incidentally sat in the cabrio today. Seat is borderline unusable much smaller than the coupe. Narrower due to mechanism and not as deep due to integrated toll bar.

So myself (5'11"), M2 (6'4"), M3 (6'0"), and M4 (6'0") were all in the car at one point. I drove, M2 was the passenger, M3 was behind me, and M4 was behind M2. I moved my seat up to a more aggressive, but comfortable seating position. M2 moved his up so he was a tad cramped but 9/10's comfortable. M3 said he was completely comfortable behind me. M4 complained about headroom on entry but once in said he was fine. While our drive was only an hour round trip, a 2 hr ride wouldn't have been a problem.
