235i performance
Hi chaps,I have had an itch to buy a 235i. After test driving one yesterday i didnt feel it had as much go as my 330d without pushing it to the red line.
Can any one convince me its a good idea to change .....!! |

It's at 4000 rpm and higher that the 235 relishes. Once the power is reached the speeds is easy to keep. I find the car is bored under 80 mph. I literally have to back off most of the time when playing, it's so easy to come up on 140 mph when laying on the gas. I find even at 90 or 100 mph the acceleration is so strong the rear axle in conjunction to the shortish wheelbase and narrowish track makes for a sensory overload from chassis feedback.

I've recently bought an m235i coming from a mapped 330d and initially felt the same.
The diesel had almost 500lbft of torque so compared to the m235i it was always gonna feel stronger low down in any gear and to a degree i miss that. On the other hand the m235i when wound up (4000 rpm upwards) is streaks ahead in performance and fun. Mine's the 8 speed auto which when in sport mode is ok but it's when in manual mode it becomes silly quick, the gear change is instant and the ratios are so close it reminds me of a performance bike. The 330d was better for storage being a bigger car and for long lazy drives down the motorway but thats all. If you want fun get an m235i |

Yesterday, I short-shifted into 2nd at 15-20mph and then eased on the throttle in 2nd until above 3k rpm then floored it. The sound of the turbo, the exhaust, spinning wheels, fighting the steering wheel to keep the car straight and seeing 70mph within just a few seconds....
What a rush. OMG. |

My dad [tidy wheelman in his day and these ardent diesel fan] has driven my car and praises the engines elasticity "its diesel-esque delivery that goes to 7000rpm". At recent BabyBmw meet, my passenger [stock m135i] was curious to know more about JB4. He was left almost speechless when I demo'd a near u turn at roundabout then uphill in 5th gear from 20 to a heck of a lot in no time at all......

I swapped my 2013 330d xDrive Touring for a 2016 M235i Convertible. They are very different cars, of course, and you can't deny the quiet power of the 3.0L diesel, where you can cruise at 70 in 8th whatever the incline. So I understand the feeling that there's more gear-changing going on in the M, and on a long motorway cruise, it's not as quiet as the 330d.
I'm glad I went for the Convertible. You can drive with the top down for more UK days than you might think. My only previous convertible (Lotus Elise) had a manual top, so sub-20-seconds is a luxury and it's really not a risk running with the top down when the weather is borderline. The 5-layer fabric makes the interior sound quite close to that of a hardtop, and the open-top experience transforms a drive. Add this to the agility and immediate power of the M235i and in my case, I'm very glad that I made the swap. Remember to get a fold-down rear seat - this makes the available luggage space much greater, whether coupé or convertible.
