Went Back to M3, saying goodbye plus stuff for sale
I just traded my M235i in on an M3, and I just wanted to say good bye and thanks. I kept the following: Brand New, Never Installed A6 Leopard Shift Knob (Satin , Pattern 3), cost me $176, sell for $150 shipped. Easy to install, this is a weighted knob, with shift pattern engraved.

Not sure if that's fair. The M235 was hyped as better faster than 1M back in the day and many bought without driving. I was honestly surprised how soft the car was myself. There are several that have expressed that sentiment and don't care about M car or not. It's a great car that appeal to more people but it's a step in a different direction for. Few that value excitemt and feel over numbers. Two of my closest buddies that disagree with me all the time both came away a bit underwhelmed. One drives 335d other 335i m sport. It's just a different philosophy now in the 235i and one that will bring it a
Broader customer base for Sure but there will always be a fee left behind. |

Well not everybody wants a go kart ride as a daily driver... if you do, you can always go with an elise or a cayman....
You can always drop a KW and call it a day too... the 335s don't seem any firmer to me whatsoever though... |

330 ZHP MT and 1M Coupe, both have very exciting traits. e30 was a 3 series and very exciting. E46M3 was a 3 series, very exciting, E90 M3 was 3 series, very exciting... not sure I get your point?

I am (was) in the market of buying a 235i until I went and drove one. To not go into the whole review, i'll just say that I was disappointed - coming from e90 335i. The primary reason I am interested in this car is because it is considered a "drivers car" and after driving it i didn't get that impression, certainly not for 52k MSRP.
To the person above that says, slap on some KW... Well if I'm going to pay $50k+ on a car that I want, I certainly don't feel like blowing another $2k on aftermarket suspension. I still plan on buying this car as it fit's most of my needs but not for a price of a brand new one. Next year i'm hoping they come down to mid 30's and i'll jump on one. |

My point is you're the first person I've seen comparing any of those, saying the 3-series are exciting and the M235i isn't. Plenty of the opposite. You're welcome to your opinion, obviously, but my point is you're the first I've seen to have it. That's all.

Absolutely...it will appeal to more people now because there are few sacrifices now...it's fast, quiet, comfortable, handles well and has nice fit and finish. It's a more appealing car to more people. That is part of the differences of opinion. So many like it and the press likes it that people can't understand why a few are a little dissapointed in it.
Myself, I have never argued that there are logical reasons for it either or that one side is right or wrong...it is simply matter of taste! It's like my first girlfriend that lived in the best part of town in a really nice house. She couldn't understand why anyone would go to a mountain and sleep in a tent, get bitten by mosquitoes and not shower for three days! She was absolutely right...it makes no sense whatsoever when you can sleep in a cushy bed, shower, toilet, tv, etc.... Logic is 1,000,000% on her side as well as the M235i uber-fans. You are all one million percent correct! I am yelling it from the mountain top! The thing is that sometimes that little discomfort and assault on your senses, a little fear and uncertainty make you feel alive and give you a rush. Some cars are not as comfy, firmer, louder, sharper, etc and they make you feel uneasy a bit but A L I V E ! It makes no sense to most but that is what happens. The 1M for example was loud and stiff, no automatic gearbox, no sunroof, lousy traction control and it can be scary at times but it was like going on a camping trip every day. The 235i can be pretty close to that but BMW softened it a tad too much and did not give you the option to get it lighter without power stuff and iDrive. I don't expect anyone to change their mind, I'm just trying to explain the unexplainable because it is illogical for sure. |

To answer why, I have to say I did like the 235i, but after 6,000 miles I realized i like the E93 M3 alot better and hear is why:
1. Just seemed too small ( I'm 6' 1", 220) 2. Gauge Cluster was way to narrow 3. I got used to the dct and now prefer it to a stick 4. The seats are stiffer and the leather looks like fake leather 5. The HK stereo does not have enough ommph and no bass. I drive windows down alot and to hear the music I basically had it turned up full blast, also no equalizer 6. I miss having a convertible (alot). 7. Based on mileage I would actually be out of warranty in the 235isix months before the warranty on the M3 runs out (4/50 v. 6/100) 8. Gotta admit the faux M bothered me. I took off the side mini m badges and was even going to take off the back M but was booed at the Bimmer club meeting for that plan 9. My tag didn't work (E93V8) What I will miss: 1. Big trunk 2. Better fuel economy (about 4 mpg) 3. Better cup holders 4. higher res nav screen

"Seems like the real reason you sold it was because you got booed at the bmw meet LOL"
No the Club actually got mad that I debadged the sides and was going to take the rear M badge off as well.

mjposner,
Thanks for your honest, subjective and detailed feedback. People should drive what they want for the reasons they want. As my wife would say.....for the average driver they will never use half the cars capability on the street....me included. When we drove it at the performance center and really pushed the car it shined.....it does not feel that way on the daily streets and does feel a bit soft....but then I am not beating the shit out of it like i did on the short track. I like it but have to admit sometimes whis I had a newer M3 but I wanted a car now and wanted a 2 door. There will always be a draw to the M but mine is mainly the sound, wide body look and the idea it is a true M. That was not enough to push me into the 70k range or buy 2nd hand...I like the warranty coverage on the new car. Now if I still lived in Cal and could run the car up Palomar mtn or other mtn runs each weekend I might have gone a different course but I am in Charlotte and needed a sporty grocery fetcher. I continue to enjoy the bantering......keep it going. mjposner...enjoy your M3 and throw some pics up in this thread |
