Post Four Door 2 Series Gran Coupe Plans Conceived

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
A 4 door model of the 2 Series has been conceived as part of an expansive compact model strategy. And make no mistake BMW are interested in such a model because it adds consistency to the Gran Coupe series and would be a successful profit unit as well as establishing a RWD narrative for this exciting new segment.

The car is viable because of the modular architecture within the platform.

The car won't appear tomorrow. At least we are looking at a possible mid-late 2015 introduction. BMW need to assess the reaction regarding the CLA and A3 Sedan in regards to how they affect the next step ie C-Klasse and A4 especially in regards to upcoming replacements.

Another factor is at best the car will be a four seater and rear passenger leg room will not be class leading. But as some have said the potential for a four dr is high given the lukewarm reaction to the CLA et all but BMW are confident that the Coupe could hold the segment until a Gran Coupe model enters the market as it delivers on every level where a BMW is expected to and confirms to what this segment actually wants but is not being given.

Edit: The following is just a speculative render by a digital artist.

I am not sure why you just don't call the 4 door version the new 1 series?

Coupé/GC/cab are even numbers, sedan/touring/GT are uneven numbers.

I see some real potential in this 2 GC, I somewhat like the styling of the new CLA but the rear is hideous.
The 2 should have it all - M235i GC!

I really hope this comes to fruition. M235i is top on my list right now, but S3 and CLA are right on it's heals. I have two little ones, the extra two doors will tip the scales. Plus, just like 6-series, the GC variant has better presence, style and proportions.

No it's not. It's effectively a 2 series sedan that they're calling a Gran Coupe so that they can stick to the new naming scheme (i.e. 6 Series Sedan = 6 Series Gran Coupe).

And this will be smaller than the F30 3 series sedan just like the coupe is smaller than the F32 4 series coupe.

Why is everyone always so hung up on the model name? Nobody would be complaining if this was called the 2 series sedan.

probably because you aren't paying attention to the market place.

the 2 series gran coupe will compete with the Mercedes CLA which is out now, as well as competitors from Audi and other marques.

Putting any confusion/unwilligness to understand the Naming convention aside, what BMW needs in the US market is a compact 4 door sedan (ala the E36 and E36 M3). The 2 series gran coupe and eventual M2 gran coupe will be exactly that replacement. Should sell like hotcakes in the US where buyers have been pining for an E36 M3 replacement. A car that is an M car, with 4 doors, and weights about 3200-3300 lbs instead of the 3500-3600 or more that the E90/E92 and the F30 models weigh.

Unfortunately, late-2015 is too late. Even if it is a million times better than the CLA / A3, BMW will be too late to the party. Honestly, this is no surprise as BMW is historically slow and overly conservative with product introductions that seem to be the most no-brainer. Not having a full 2-series stable of cars to bring to market was a massive mistake, and it will hurt the company.

As is not having an X7, nor a competitor to the fast-selling Infiniti JX (QX60), nor a Mercedes SL competitor, nor a competitive small sportscar...

This is great news, though I don't know why it took BMW so long to greenlight this. The company has really taken on a very conservative and risk-averse strategy this decade, and has been following Audi and MB to the market in a lot of segments instead of leading in or even creating those segments themselves.

If the 1er goes FWD, then this could be the multi-door option for those that still want RWD (like me).

It's effectively a 1-series sedan, since the car will be built on the F2X platform, but like the 6-series GC and 4-series GC, it follows BMW's new naming convention.

+1. I miss the days when the BMW lineup was just the 3, 5, 6, 7, X3, X5, Z4. There is no focus or distinction within their lineup now with all of this SAC, CG, and GT bullshit.

Not quite. But if they made a 4 series GC, you could essentially call that a restyled 3 series.

Stop assuming! I'm very aware of the marketplace, and I really don't care about what every other manufacturer is doing. I think all of this GC stuff is nonsense. My personal opinion. Your mileage may vary!

The F20 and F21 1-series and F22, F23, and F26 (this car) 2-series are built on the same RWD platform. When the new generation of 1-series switches to a FWD platform, it's a very safe bet to assume that the corresponding generation of 2-series cars will also make that switch to FWD as well.
