The M235i will be replaced later on by the M2.

I am starting to have doubts about the M2.

When you start put things together, you ask yourself what engine would go in it. Without it stepping on the M3/M4 toes. I just don't see them putting a turbo 4 in it like the competitors.

Then there is the LSD option that will be available for the M235i. Usually that is saved for the full M-treatment.

It just seems difficult to slot a car between the M235i and M4. Both already having FI inline 6 cylinders. Also with them saying their goal was to outperform the 1M, it does sound like this is the successor.

If it does come, won't be for years. Maybe a low volume car like the 1M.
There will be no M2.

M235i will be able to compete with the M3/4. Just as the 1M could compete with a e9x m3.

Besides people always didn't wanto compare their $80,000 M3 to a $50,000 1M.(even though it is a very close comparison track time wise)

The naming is another financial stint by BMW.
bingo....hell even the standard 135 was nearly as quick as an m3 of the time. the fact is that not everybody wants the 'smallest' BMW.....but some of us ONLY want the smallest BMWs!!

M235i will beat 1m on ring if mboss says it will. Car NOW to satisfy those who couldn't/didn't get 1m. Now BMW can say "here you go, here's your car that 'better' than the 1m"

My $0.02 is that there will be M2 in a couple years. My guess i4, screaming turbo, light and very quick. CSL? A game changer (again). Spiritual Successor to 2002turbo?

People may say " why should I buy an i4 when I have (or can get used) an i6 m235?" That's why it will have to be a great car, to satisfy those who want smaller dynamic car 'better' than m235i. And so, BMW creates constant desire for the next thing

I don`t beleive there is any chance to get a 4cyl in the M2 as it will be a deal breaker for so many potential buyer. You just have to be patient the M2 will be there late 2015/ early 2016.

Gotta keep an open mind. An i4 turbo can create some impressive power stats. With the right weight, styling, and connection to BMW heritage (I can see the whole marketing dept having a hard-on with the "M2 turbo" to "2002turbo" advert scheme), an i4 M2 turbo could be a winner

As far as "deal breaker" specs, not sure it matters to BMW. Want an i6? Get an m3/m4, that's the car for you. Or just get the M235. Want a light, nimble, track car? M2 is your answer. It fills a niche nicely

When did "ahead of" replace the word "before" in the media? I don't like it.

Anyways it's about time another "2002 Spritual successor" makes it to market. I was worried there.

I hope it's an e46 successor too including a 4 door and wagon.

It isn't just the LSD that gives that vibe as I stated in my post.

Also having a LSD as an option versus an after purchase accessory is quite different.

I mean what engine would go in it? A beefed up N20, only then it would just have the same hp as the N55 in the M235i. A detuned S55, not going to happen. They won't just make a one off engine for an M2. Will it be another parts bin car like the 1M. A carbon roof, trunk, etc are out the window with a car in a lower price range (unless they hike up the price considerably).

Since they were targeting 1M performance with the M235i, it just leaves one wondering.

But like I said, they could do a low volume M2 for a year like the 1M. Don't see it happeing for years.

Don't see a 4-cylinder either. If they did it would be a beefed up N20 and only then would it just reach the power levels the N55 is already putting out.

If they actually did a turbo-4, they would have to sell weight savings BIG TIME to move the car.

The car looks awesome (does it look like carbon black?). Still, no DCT is a real drag...

When I ordered my 2008 in late 2007, the car was not debuted yet. I never even saw one in person until the night before I picked mine up. And that was at the NAIAS at Jacob Javitz in NYC

My well equipped 128i was $42k. So, wishful thinking. $52k is more like it.

Except for the E30 M3 I don`t remember any M car that has a smaller displacement engine that the high end model ( 2.3 vs 2.5 in that case) and the EVO M3 went back with a 2.5L. On that assumption and on the recent interview with M brand director telling that there won`t be any 4cyl M car in a near future I seriously doubt that the M2 will get a 4cyl. M car are about weight your right but they can use light weight material instead and provide us a car with a sweet sounding and smooth engine. The torque curve on a 340-360hp turbo 4cyl 2.0L won`t be that flat and it will sound horrible. Long life for BMW straight 6!

My loaded 2011 e92 328xi was $50k. I would think a loaded M235i shouldn't cross the $50k mark by much. Then again, BMW prices have gone up a lot this gen.

yes, sorry, I meant to type F30 and F32 !

YEAHHHHHHHH BOYEEEEEEEEEE! (flavor flav voice).

I totally agree. Shave 150-200 lbs off the weight of a 235, carbon fiber roof, lighter glass.. unique interior... perhaps even a CSL treatment... And if BMW wants to keep the M3/M4 exclusive and ensure it is the most popular M car in the lineup (with respect to brand marketing and sales) then the best way to do that is to use a 4 cylinder motor and all the people who hate the idea of it not coming with a 6 cylinder can mod their 235 to their heart's delight) or spend another 15K for an M3/4.

The idea of an M2 in my mind would be for it simply SMOKE a 1M. We know their goal is to make the 235i quicker around a track than the 1M.. not hard... but then up the game more and make the M2 a serious sports car.

revisionist history. SEE E30 325 (6cyl) and E30 M3 (4 cyl)
Carbon fiber is not out of the range with HIGHER PRODUCTION NUMBERS.
it won't work for 700 cars.... but 7000 cars over a 4-5 year period.. yes.

And as far as one off motor... make it a two off.. how about an M2 coupe and an M2 gran coupe that brings back some E36 M3 nostalgia with respect to dimensions ?
