True enough. For whatever reason, boutique cars, although technically production cars obviously, are typically not considered by volume manufacturers when claims about engine properties and features are being made. As someone else pointed out earlier, the Mitsubishi FQ-400 actually made 200hp/L when it was in production, but that was a very limited car sold only in one country (if I recall).

What makes you so sure? As others have mentioned, the original M3 had an I4 while the 325i of the time had an I6. I believe that the second generation M5, which had an I6, was around when BMW first released the V8 in the 5 series as well.

Now, if the M2 does get an I4, what does that say about the chances for the M235i to get the new B68 I6 after it appears next year in the 4 GC (if rumors hold)? The new motor should be capable of quite a bit more power than the N55. So would they just keep the N55 in the M235i or would they switch to the B68 but in a relatively low state of tune?

Well, sure, 175hp/L+ from a naturally aspirated engine would be ridiculously impressive for a production car. Most purpose built racing engines don't even make that kind of power per liter of displacement. It takes a lot of air moving through a cylinder in a short amount of time to get that much power. Typically that is achieved with extremely high RPM, like a super-bike motor, which usually has a very short stroke. And efficiency takes a big toll when you move that much fuel through the cylinder.

If it were truly that simple of a matter to make big power from production turbocharged engines (which must meet very stringent reliability and efficiency goals), then it would be more commonplace. What AMG has done is really quite impressive for an engine that will be produced in significant volumes.

Of course, it's all in Mercedes web site, in configurator, everywhere, it is officially 360 ps or 355 hp/bhp, same as the E46 M3 CSL or same as what dynoes "globally" prooved for any 1M Torque is 450 nm, same as M135i or Audi RS3, 1M has 500 nm advertised, around 550 in reality.

Considering the development of the m235i and the chassis based on an I6 weight balance I would expect a similar power output and construction maybe boosted by intercooler and tuning. This all taking into consideration that it can't have more than the m4s' projected torque output on paper. Regardless I trust the m engineers to get my next car right after they hit the e82 spot on.

For me it's gotta be a six! It's tradition! I know I know the e30 m3 was a 4 banger, but come on!! We need the silky smooth inline six, with it's beautiful sound under the bonnet! If its anything less, I'd walk away personally.

i doubt they're going to give the M2 a 4Cyl engine when the m235i already has a monster n55 6Cyl. i think a revised n55 is the way to go.
if they want to be extra nice they can throw the F8X running gear in it and make it the perfect ///M car <3

Frankly, the two series -- M and otherwise -- should just use the engines in the three series. That the current 1er did use the 3er engines is part of what makes them so great. Why screw up a good formula?

How about a 5-cyl? I think this will be a nice engine for the 2er. Heck it it be beneficial to 3er bc that 4 cylinder doesn't sound that good under load.

Those who favor an I4 are a tiny minority of an enthusiast community. I would bet that they are even a smaller minority of the larger BMW buying population.

I am pretty certain that BMW's own market research would have come to the same conclusion... A 4 cylinder is simple marketing suicide for the M2, I think BMW is way smarter than that and will be fitting this car with a 350-370 HP Inline 6 / 3.0 liter Bi-Turbo (evolution of the N54 rather than an evolution of the N55)
Having worked in Germany and having plenty of friends in different countries, I think this is an extremely US-centric view. I realize we make up a good amount of total BMW sales, but I suspect that if this poll were more global, you'd see a closer balance in preference. I don't see the I4 winning in many cases, but I can see the number of folks not blindly favoring the bigger engine skewing way downward.

I also think that the market differentiation of having a relatively cushy, torquey M3/M4 and a more raw, peaky and challenging M2 would make more sense than having essentially two slices of the same pie. But then I'm not making these calls, and M has certainly changed a lot since the days of the E30 M3, so who knows what we'll actually see.
The difference in models makes complete sense. Why have two slices of the same pie? Im on the I4 train mainly because of better economy and lighter weight. Im only 19

I would be ok with an s20 motor depending how it sounds. I really don't care for the sound of the n20 at idle (engine ticking) this is the only thing that worries me. I would prefer a N54 with about 360hp since I had two cars with this motor and I have to say I enjoyed it more than my E92 M3. Realistic with fuel economy and technology it will prob be a i4.

I wish you could add a vote option for a TT V8 in the car with xdrive!!!? That would actually be awesome power and to hell with the weight... it would be mad usable power! That would be a great daily driver car for us in the North Eastern states in the winter time...

I think a high output version of the n51 would be epic. The output could easily be in the low to mid 300hp range. Magnesium and aluminum block will keep the weight down. Maybe a small turbo to help the power output if necessary. NA would be awesome tho.
