I scratched the itch yesterday and went and drove the M4.
I have been driving the M240 a lot this week so I thought it would be good to compare the two. The M4 is beautiful, love the color and look, but I have to say, I didn't like the drive as much as I hoped I would. Given it's been damp around here lately and the back did step out on my slightly a couple times which I expected (or should I say I tried to do on purpose, it was fun). Definitely a more powerful car, but my M240 with xdrive has more usable power in my opinion so I'm sticking with it. Thank you all for the advice, there was a lot of very great information in all the posts, it's nice to have a resource like this when making decisions. Now I'm back to trying to decide what to do with my X5 lease that is up soon, X5 M50 or X7 M50 |

I see an X5M as the next buy in 36 months |

Only you can scratch that itch.
I will offer the following as something to consider. I liked the M4 a lot and when bringing in my M240i for the annual service I comment to the Service Manager, that maybe I should trade for the M4. He tells me "keep what you have", we have too many of the M cars in for problems compared to the M240i. You won't see a big jump in performance especially with the Dinan tune you have on your car now". Strangely, my sales manager tells me the same thing. He is honest as the day is long, and is missing out on a commission by not pushing a sale. FWIW, when the guys with a vested interest in selling and servicing cars steers me away from one of their higher priced products, that tells me something. Not sure how your dealership operates...but thought my experience was worth sharing. Amendment: I'm not at all demeaning the M cars. I like their looks and the pride that comes with owning one. On the practical side, if those cars were less costly to repair and had better service records I would surely consider owning one even with the higher "buy-in" price. I didn't like the 4 series compared to the 2. Everything was larger/floppier/looser to me. The 2 felt tighter. (comparing not M to M but 228i to 430i). That I saved a boat load of money was just icing on the cake. If you want the best 2 series, you may just end up in a Supra Seth |

I think you should ask this question in the general BMW forum to get a less biased answer, but I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a car.
More power usually comes with more weight and size. You probably already know this, but the bigger and heavier the car, the less fun it is. Typically the manufacturers try to compensate with more power, which ends up being a vicious cycle. Not necessarily a bad thing. I guess I have to drive both M4 and M4C to tell if it is really worth the upgrade, but have you considered the M2? If it was my money, I'd consider the plain M2 in 6MT and RWD. At 3450 lbs, the car is plenty fast, reasonably light, is fully loaded and there should be some in the market from owners who wanted to upgrade to the M2C or M2CS. |

If Toyota makes the Supra in manual transmission, I'm gonna have a serious conversation with my wife about trading in my 2 series |

On paper the Supra is a better car for me, which an M2 is not. Enough cargo capacity, better steering feel, supple ride with handling biased to accessible, controllable oversteer, ugly enough no one will think I bought it for the looks and a Toyota so I didn't buy it for snob appeal (not that I really care about that, but still . . .), plenty of nearby Toyota dealers so I have a choice of service departments.
Unfortunately the mirrors are a fatal flaw for me. If I set my head low enough that I can see the road off to the right under the rear view mirror while turning, I can't see the road off to the left over the left side mirror. If I set it high enough that I can see over the side mirror the rear view mirror blocks out an important part of the view. I could never be comfortable driving this car just because of that.

If it were me, I'd go for an M2 Competition, with the S55 engine. There's also an M2 CS coming with 444 hp standard, although it'll probably be like the M3/M4 CS with no armrests, etc. But for now, I'm sticking with my F80 M3 and wife's 228i M-Sport convertible.
