Not another oil thread...

Hello, I live up in the frozen tundras of Minnesota during the winter. We do get pretty hot summers though. So, should I run different oils in these different seasons?

For instance run 5w30 in winter and 0w30 in summer?

Also for the B58 engine should I bother with the 40 viscosity or just stick with the 30s?

Please keep in mind that I drive the car hard; I don't track it but I do drive it like it is meant to be driven.

If you do anything, you'd want to do the opposite. 0w30 in winter and 5w30 in summer. But no, it's not necessary. Run 0w30 year around and you'll be fine.

You want thinner in winter, but a 0 and 5 weight flow at nearly the same temps unless were below -30, so find something you like and use it year round. I usually stick with a 5/40

It is Minnesota being talked about. Less than -30 is possible there.

Considering the -30 Temps - You can look at a 0 weight oil. I run a 5W40 all year around in NJ. I also don't go over 3000 rpm until the oil is over 180F.

Good idea waiting for the oil to come up to temp before leaning on the car, especially if you intend on keeping it.

FWIW, my Cincinnati dealer puts in 0W-20 year-round. OT, but TC Kline Racing told me that oil is good to use at the track. That advice came as a surprise; my frames of reference for track driving were the S50B32 and the S38B35, and each of those required much higher viscosity oils. For example, the S50 ran 15W-50 Red Line Race oil.

I agree with WolfGTI. If the temps might go below -30 you can consider a 0w oil. I live in NY and run 5w40 all year.

Sorry to revive this old thread, but I am a bit confused and prefer to stay within spec while under warranty. I switched to 0w30 for my 1500 mile change. The manual specifies 0w20 or 0w30. When I went to take the car to the dealer for it's first included oil change they would not use 0w30 because they said spec is 0w20. Which is it?

The BMW spec for the 2017 B58 engined cars in North America is an oil that meets LL-01FE or LL-14FE+ & LL-17FE+ specifications, your manual will tell you if that is still the case for your 2020 car.

Various 0w30 and 5w30 oils meet the LL-01FE specs - BMW Twin Power Turbo LL-01FE 0w30, Motul 5w30 LL-01FE, LIqui Moly Special Tec B FE 5W-30, etc.

Various 0w20 oils meet the LL-14FE+ or LL-17FE+ spec - BMW Twin Power Turbo LL-17FE+ 0w20, Motul SpecificLL-14 FE+ 0W20, Liqui Moly Top Tec 6600 0W20, etc.

Look for these BMW specs on the oil label if not buying the BMW branded ones, but you won’t generally find them at Walmart or other big box stores.

The thinner oils were introduced as a mpg improvement for the engines... Personally I don't like the 0 weight oils (too thin) and really though, it it's -30* outside are you going anywhere? Starting your car other than in an emergency? The thin oil makes the engine more noisey as well, I can hear the lifters more, the slightly thicker 5W oils improve that, especially the 5-40... Anyways ...

Again, with -30* temps, I wouldn't be doing anything but sitting on the couch sipping some hot coco, lolz! And if you are in a temperate zone that has those temps common, a vehicle with an engine block heater would be on the list because any oil is going to be troublesome at those extremes. Just my $.02

Most years we have -30C temperatures for quite a few days, often down to -30F and sometimes below that. This is normal winter weather, I’ve had multiple BMWs that have cold soaked all day in -30C weather while at work without a block heater and have started OK. There is no “official” block heater solution for modern BMW engines and some with compound engine blocks with magnesium such as the N52 would likely be damaged by trying to fit a block heater.

0wXX weight oils are normal around here, with no apparent engine life issues, going by the older European manufacturer cars on the road which are typically the manufacturers that specify 0wXX oils as the standard grade.
