What's weird to me is that when I test drove a couple 2ers on the dealer lots before ordering, you could hear the engine sound (ASD) loud and clear.. There was no way I could tell it was coming from the exhaust because it was loud enough in Sport mode...

I wonder if BMW is now turning off ASD, on some cars, at the factory?
I did the trick someone suggested in another thread - in park, rev the car to 2000 rpm or more, and switch between comfort and sport to hear the ASD effect - it's apparently louder in sport. I am surprised at how little the volume changes between the two - so maybe BMW dialed down the ASD volumes in 230/240? It is making me rethink of retrofitting in the bypass harness.

I agree that the ASD is much more subtle in the M240 than it is in the M235, but it's still there. Switching to sport mode sounded rediculous in the M235 I test drove. Even still, I like the car better without fake noise. I coded it off and have no intentions of ever turning it back on

Is there any way to retrofit ASD? I have a 2017 230i and the only thing that changes from comfort to sport mode is the exhaust flap opening up.

ASD should be present in all 2-series cars - I disabled it in my wife's 2016 228i Convertible. Using Carly or any other coding program, you can change the ASD sound to that of M5/M6, Rolls-Royce, or a few other choices depending on your car model and year. The same program should also allow setting the volume higher or lower. I used Carly for BMW on both my cars to turn it completely off - not needed in my M3 and not wanted in the 228i.

I had a '16 228i before my current 230i.
There is for sure the difference in the exhaust note - 230i is louder. Inside, mostly you get ASD so doesn't really matter. Unless you go with bootmod3. It gets more fun (to hear burbles). But that's achieved on both engines.

I concur, I had a 15 228i an now a 18 230i The 230i exhaust has more notes. I never had a burble in the 228i I get them now with stock 230i.

We had a new X3 4-cylinder loaner for a few days and the difference between the new engine and the one in my wife's 2016 was noticeable enough that she remarked on it very favorably. There is much less clatter, overall it is much smoother and accelerates noticeably better at low speeds.
We love our X3 and have no intentions of getting a new one any time soon, but the engine upgrade is a big plus.
I imagine that the difference would be comparable on the 230 vs. the 228.
