2014 6.5" conversion

Good morning! Hoping to get some assistance. We recently bought a 2014 228i (build date 12/13) that came with the 6.5. I found a NBT HU and a screen off a 328i. My question is, are those the only 2 things I need for a full conversion? Do I need nav antenna or is that built in to the nbt? Do I need coding or is it plug and play?

Hi there,

It is most definitely not plug and play. You will need to do some coding.
Do you know which year the NBT HU is from? Also, which hardware revision? Like 3.1, 4.1, 5.1, etc. It should say on a label in the front.

If you wait patiently, I may post a full guide of how I retrofitted an NBT HU + 8.8" screen to my 2015 F22 (220i). The only difference between yours and mine is that you may still have a CIC system, whereas I started on an ENTRYNAV system. That will change the wiring of some of the microphones (main or emergency). Other than that, everything else can be retrofitted just like in mine. If you have an NBT "evo" unit, it'll be jam packed with new features. If you have a regular NBT (non-evo) you will have way less features.

As far as nav antenna: does your current system have built-in navigation? If yes, you'll be able to use the same antenna cable *ONLY IF* the NBT unit you're buying has an on-board GPS connector. If it's an "evo" unit, most units won't have an on-board GPS. If it's regular NBT, you will probably have an on-board GPS. Some rare early NBT-evo units from Europe (like mine) still have an on-board GPS.

You will probably also need to retrofit a newer iDrive controller (the controller with the nav, tel, option, etc. buttons and the wheel selector), but you may be able to use your current one by coding a specific parameter.

Thanks for the reply.

its an NBT HU coming off a 2014 328i. Only thing I could find in the front bottom right of the unit is the Harman sticker which has the model number as HB B114, EC 441, HW 21. Currently the car is equipped with a CIC unit and no nav.
