How i can activate the Carplay and rear camera?
I attach a photo of the radio. Please let me know what are the sockets in which I do not have plugs connected.

You do have the pink WLAN port so depending on the firmware you're on, it may be possible to enable Apple CarPlay on this setup.

Firstly - it's possible and i've done it. Screen shot shows my 2018 F48 X1 with BMW Carplay.

1. From what I can see the "standard" X1 F48 2018 (and likely 2019 from what i've read) does not have the right electronics as above for Carplay, so you need to swap it if you want "native" BMW carplay.

2. The trick to check (I've not heard of any way to do this in software/by VIN as of now) is - Does it have a Wifi logo on the top lid (mine didn't) or does it have the connector referenced on this thread (likely not - more likely a blanking plate) and just a Bluetooth logo?

3. Locate a new head unit that has WiFi/Bluetooth. I got lucky with ebay adverts showing a "Carplay enabled" head-unit and then found the part number on the lid. It's 8705960. Mine was advertised as from a 1 Series / F20 - and from what I've understood they are compatible across a number of BMW's. I paid just over £110 for mine and the time of writing can see 2 more for similar money on ebay.co.uk and others (more £) in Europe.

This is the complex part though - in effect you'll need either:
a) someone who knows how to "virginize" the new head unit, to remove the specific BMW codes for device specific codes (Sat Nav) - and I didn't find anyone. I think right now this may not even be possible.
b) A head unit hat has these codes (FSC) codes that are older than the car you have. The coder will in effect be "pulling" off your original codes and putting them back on the new head unit. Whilst this doesn't take a huge amount of time (20-30 mins it seems) - it won't work if the codes on the "new" unit are more recent than your original codes, as they'll get overwritten (or similar logic - I'm no expert).

So - I got lucky and the breaker's yard told me the VIN - I sent my contacts this and also checked the various VIN online tools to find the build date of that vehicle. It was months before my card was build. The pros/coders can check the actual create date of the specific codes to be sure - so a useful check. It was confirmed I was lucky - my car was a clear months more recent :-)

4. The physical head unit swap is quite straight forward (some of the connectors are a little tricky to get off but they're doable with patience). I got a £3 angled "dentist mirror" which helped be see the back of the unit/the connectors as the cabling was very tight on mine - so not much slack to pull out.

5. The new head unit should boot up and work for "basics" - in my case really just FM and AM (ie no Nav, No DAB etc). This means you can setup this up without having to have the coder there and then.

6. You'll then need the BMW CarPlay FSC code for the VIN of your car. - which comes from BMW and a number of people in the UK/USA sell these. They are not cheap - pricing seems to vary but its around £350-£450 from what I've seen, so pricey.

You'll need help from the coder (physically there with their kit or remotely - via a £15 cable and a laptop with wifi/internet)

7. The code needs to be applied and the menu codes to provide the Carplay option in the menu. I'd say this is a highly specialist gig - esp when changing a head unit - as the unit needs to be coded to the car, options added, DAB enabled, Sat Nav re-enabled. Speech rec re-enabled. This is where the dates of the codes matter - as per above.

6. I was up and running in less than an hour, I imagine as the coder contact I was introduced to is a real pro, he's done several Carplay installs - although to be fair this one was his first head unit swap, so it was a little nervy, whilst also being a bit of a challenge :-)

Oh, and you'll really need a wifi aerial. These are around £6 on ebay / £8 on amazon and without one the whole thing is much more painful. They just plug into the head unit and can rest on the head unit fine.

Hope that helps at least someone else..
Any queries, let me know.

Good luck!
Thanks a lot for this post, very useful. I have few questions:
-I’ve found the donor head unit that you mentioned (8705960), however this one has the cd slot whereas mine didn’t had, I wonder if this affect to the fitting of the exterior console. This would be for a X1 F48.
-Most donor unit that I can find belong to the F20, though the code is the same, it should be fine isn’t ?
-If the donor is older than mine, all fsc options I have now should be operative as well (after recoding), meaning Traffic information, teleservice, my bmw app.. right ?

Thanks again,

Actually I found that the HU code for the X1 would be 8705966, that right?

ENTRYNAV (ROUTE) Head Unit is NOT capable of CarPlay.

Hello. I have such entrynav (see photo below).
There is wifi port, yes? If CarPlay is not possible in ENTRYNAV, what this port is used for?

I don't understand what you ask. I just confirmed above you had WLAN Port, thus CarPlay is possible.

You said earlier (https://www.2addicts.com/forums/show...5&postcount=73) that CarPlay is not possible in ENTRYNAV.

I am confused now. What head unit do I have?

To prevent double posting, there is my thread, where I replaced my head unit (from HU_ENTRYNAV with no WLAN port to HU_ENTRYNAV (?) with WLAN)

https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1961034

Thank you

My mistake. You do have ENTRYNAV, not ENTRYNAV2, so CarPlay NOT possible. I think maybe the only thing ENTRYNAV WLAN port can do is possibly Mobile Hot Spot, else it is not any ever implemented.

So to be clear.

Originally I had ENTRYNAV (https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...82&postcount=1)

And I replaced it to ENTRYNAV2 with no issues? (https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...31&postcount=2)

Additional info - navigation maps looks the same as before (maps version is Route)

If yes, can you tell me how to get CarPlay working / how much does it cost?

No. I corrected my posts above. You have ENTRYNAV, not ENTRYNAV2.

Larger screen?

Hi guys, sorry to jump in, since you've been debating about the HU_ENTRYNAV2 head unit - does this unit support a larger (8.8") screen? I'm talking about the version that has business nav (S606, "WAY" maps) and the basic 6.5" screen. Car is a MY2019 made in 2018 (G01). Thanks!

EDIT: Does it have to do anything with the head unit's firmware version?

Bumping a old thread here but +1 for steve@codemybimmer for upgrading my USDM 2018 M240i from a 6.5 inch CID to a 8.8 touchscreen CID and enabling CarPlay. Could not be happier
