Wireless Security

I'm not fond of the thought of someone maliciously cooking my motor for fun. I am a network engineer and there is no level of security that I would trust on any Bluetooth. Bluetooth and security is an oxymoron. I would only use Wi-Fi if I could secure it with WPA2-Personal AES and a key longer than 24 random characters. Others opinions may vary.

Be aware that OBDLink does NOT work with BMWWHAT. I had to purchase another adapter after finding that out the hard way. Kind of disappointing given the price of the OBDLink adapter.

Will this work for any F chassis? I'm in F82 and have Apple products. What should I use? Any updates on oil temp reading? Also can you get the boost reading with an iPhone? thanks

Good point, and although unlikely - it is a possibility. Safest bet is to unplug it when you're not using it.

one thing I've found much to desire is the 0-60 from Torque Pro. perhaps it is due to the phone GPS, using S4, the recorded time is way off on f82

This is great! I will get this wifi OBD reader and app once my M235i comes in next month.

Though it may work fine on my older iphone 4S I don't use. Looks like I need the ieGeek:

My OBD reader needs stem from wanting more/better information when using Harry's Lap Timer. Harry's research clearly shows the fastest compatible OBD reader is the OBDLink MX Wi-Fi.

I have only owned this tool for about a week, but it seems to work well.

NOTE: Running iOS 8.1.3 on an iPhone 6.

Many thanks to all involved in verifying the different devices and compiling this list. This will save many people a lot of time, money, and frustration.

I have this wifi adapter, worked on my 2004 E46 M3:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B3K2X4M

Note that I only used it with DashCommand on iPhone though. Didn't try it with Torque (the M3 is now sold, so can't try the bluetooth OBD2 & Torque app).

I would also add BMWhat App to this list as it can also be used to monitor a lot of BMW specific engine parameters that the previously mentioned apps can't monitor. However bmwhat can only monitor 6 engine parameters at a time, and there seems to be about a 7 second delay between parameter readings, the delay is with using their bluetooth adapter for android. I'm not sure if the wifi adapter has this same delay. I've emailed the developer about the lag and they state it's normal because the bluetooth commands are so complicated. I have a feeling it's their bt adapter. I wish the engine parameters feature would work with the obdlink which is the fastest obdII bt adapter on the market.

I don't know because I use android. I need someone who uses ios to log their engine parameters and see if there is a delay between data points.

I still can access cellular data while connected to the OBD reader via Wi-Fi.

Agree that this is a concern. The OBDLink MX WiFi unit does have WPA2 AES security. This unit costs > $100, compared to other adapters that cost < $20, but the security and sleep features may make it worth the cost.

Jb4?

Will this work in conjunction with a Jb4 on a map other than map 0 ?

I know some readings will be inaccurate due to the Jb4 tricking the ecu to thinking the measured parameters are unchanged. Has anyone tried this in conjunction with any type of tuning?

I've used the
PLX KIWI 2 wifi
for years with Apple / iOS 5-8
On REV / OBDScanner / CommandDASH app / Harry's Lap Timer

The obd is not compact - cost is 70$
Does have password setup/ once done and linked ur set.

Picking up the IKKEDOL VGate w auto sleep 30$
I like to try a compact version - the PLX can get cumbersome.

Here are few pics from REV and COmmandDASH

BMWHAT should for sure be added to this list. its way more powerful.

I use this adapter:

BAFX Products - Bluetooth OBD2 scan tool
http://amzn.com/B005NLQAHS

As far as mounts nothing beats the

Breffo Spiderpodium Smartphone Mount & Holder
by Breffo
Link: http://amzn.com/B00BN5OE44

Works great with Torque and i will test it with BMWhat soon. This thread seems a bit uncompleted and some of the adapters you listed are very limited..
