I picked up the pieces to do this in my M235i a couple days ago. I ended up going with this equipment:

ScanTool 427201 OBDLink LX Bluetooth - $50
https://www.amazon.com/ScanTool-4272.../dp/B00H9S71LW

I have an iPhone, so using my phone with it was a no-go. Also, my iPhone is a 5S with a 4 inch screen so I wanted something larger. I picked up this phone from Amazon:

BLU R1 HD - $60
https://www.amazon.com/BLU-R1-HD-Exc...dp/B01H2E0J5M/

I got the version with the Amazon special offers, so it shows ads on the lock screen. This isn't my primary device so I don't care about that. This is a surprisingly nice device for $60. I don't have a SIM installed in it because I don't need have a need for that. The phone is installed in this holder:

Belkin Car Cup Holder Mount for Smartphones - $30
https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Car-Ho.../dp/B00NL7GTXG

For the app I'm using Torque Pro from Google Play:

Torque Pro - $5
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...l.torque&hl=en

I've automated things a bit using Macrodroid:

Macrodroid - Free - $3 for no ads
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...crodroid&hl=en

My automation works like this:
1. I wake up and unlock the phone. Macrodroid turns on bluetooth, waits 1 second, launches Torque.

2. If I lock the screen Macrodroid asks Torque the quit and turns off bluetooth.

3. If I happen to forget to lock the screen manually when I'm done, when the car turns off the lighter, which my phone detects as power being disconnected, Macrodroid asks Torque to quit, turns off bluetooth, and locks the screen.

4. If the Light Sensor increases to 25lx, wait three seconds, if still 25lx, turn the screen brightness all the way up. This makes it easier to see in sun light. Auto brightness on the phone itself doesn't bring it all the way to 100%.

5. If the Light Sensor decreases to 10lx, wait three seconds, if still 10lx, turn the screen brightness to 10%. This makes it less bright at night.

This way Torque is only running when I unlock the phone. If I don't want to see it, I lock the screen and Torque disconnects from the car and bluetooth turns off. I don't have to worry about it being connected when I don't want it. So far everything works pretty well but I'm only a few days in.

Thanks for the Macrodroid tip!

No problem. I edited my previous post with two new actions I added to adjust the screen brightness. I'll need some time to fine tune these actions a little more, but so far, so good.

Scangauge 2 parameters to display EOT

Does it have a real 70s J.C.Whitney feel? Sure. However, no one but the driver can see it, the left 2 columns are visible to the driver all the time, it's not there in the middle of your dash acting as a magnet for some kid to break your window, and your wife won't spend any time chewing your ass for blocking her vent in the summertime.

You're also not broadcasting an unprotected Bluetooth link into your ECU whenever your car is running.

Torque question. Has anyone figured out if the ability to show oil temperature is model/build year specific? I have a 05/14 build and it's not showing up for me. I've tried a Vgate and another WIFI device. I also have a P3 Gauge and oil temp shows up on it.

I don't think it's year/model specific. My car is a 05/14 build and it works. I can't remember how to get it to work but I did find the info in here. I haven't used it for a while so maybe read the whole thread. It's a setting when you select a custom set of gauges if I remember correctly.

I have oil temp, coolant temp, boost pressure, oil pressure, and speedo set to my custom gauges.

I went back through the thread and post 134 has instructions for adding oil temp to dashcommand, but not Torque. Any chance you can remember how to do it in Torque?

After reading through this thread, I used the Vgate iCar Pro OBD II wi-fi ($30 on Amazon) and Bimmer Code (coding app $26.99) on my iPhone X.

It was a breeze, the Vgate worked perfectly, and it took under an hour. My coding changes so far:

1) Remove Disclaimers
2) Add digital speedometer to instrument cluster. For those who lost their time in the display, the time will re-set when the car connects to Connected Drive.
3) Added M animation on display screen at start-up.
4) Removed M235i logo in instrument cluster. I really like the cleaner look of the cluster without it.
5) Added M Performance logo at start up in instrument cluster.
6) Mirror fold on lock.

Thanks to all who posted tips on how to do this. The best $56.99 I've spent on my car so far!

Is anyone aware of custom OBD2 PIDs for BMWs in general of F22 specifically that can be added to Torque Settings -> Manage extra PIDs/Sensors?

I bought the "Panlong Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Car Diagnostic Scanner Check Engine Light for Android - Compatible with Torque Pro" on Amazon and have used it successfully with Torque Pro and Bimmercode.

OBD2 (On-Board Diagnostics, Version 2) is a hardware Dafont Showbox Adam4adam diagnostic & sensor protocol for communicating your car’s sensor & error data to an external scanner or monitor. In the early days, scanners were expensive pieces of standalone equipment costing many hundreds (thousdands?) of dollars.

  7. The Engine Oil Temperature PID is SAE.EOT. Choose that.

That's the hard part. The name of the gauge will be Quick Gauge, so change it to Oil Temp. Then set your low and high ranges. I went with 0-300. That's the basics.

Dash Command doesn't really prompt you in an intuitive way to add the PID, and even after that, it has no idea of the range, so it's like 0-3000 or something.

Hope that helps!

I have a 2014 m235i and i have tried both Dashcommand and Torque pro, neither are displaying the oil temp! It's extremely frustrating and i cannot figure out why! Any advice??
