Cracked windshield @ 800 miles.

Went out to my car this morning and found that it had a large crack across the top. It appears that there may have been an impact at the very top of the glass, very tiny if true, which leads me to believe that a rock may have hit it while I was driving, and then the heat (very hot in NY today) caused the glass to expand and crack.

The car's only at 800 miles. What's the best course of action here?
I assume it's not covered under warranty?

Contact your insurance company.

Depends on the state, not covered here in New Jersey.

edit: Or should I say under a mandatory coverage rule.

Your comprehensive policy should cover glass. Maybe even with no deductible. Mine does. I've used it many times. Make sure that you ask for genuine BMW replacement glass specifically though. Sometimes they try and use aftermarket glass which is okay with some people but if you trade your car in dealerships may take notice.

Comprehensive glass coverage is one of the cheapest additions to a policy. If you don't have it already now would be the time to add it.

As others mentioned above, first thing to do is to check your insurance policy to see if it is covered.

If it is, look around for a good shop, file the claim and get a new one installed. FYI, it is almost ridiculous how many different variations of windshields are available for this car.

Talk with your dealer and get a recommendation for windshield replacement shop that will use BMW glass. In my area it is Euroglass in Redmond.

You think this car is bad try the F30. You have standard - HUD - Camera and every permutation in between, though the aftermarket companies just do the standard and HUD + Camera it seems.

I had an aftermarket Safelite windshield done on my F30 and had no problems with it whatsoever. The only visual distinction was the circle cutout for the camera that I didn't have in the black masking. (It was still black, just a different shade).
