Went to the dealer forgot to decline car wash

Went to the dealer today for the free oil change. I forgot to decline the free car wash.

I had my wheels coated in Autodip, which had up to this point been holding up amazingly. So when I come out, my wheels are peeled off and it looked like someone had sat there with a pressure washer.

What can I do about this, I emailed the service manager since he was not in office, what type of response can I expect?

If he's a nice and polite person, perhaps an expression of regret....but that's about it. They did nothing unreasonable and certainly not negligent. Your wheels have an unusual/unexpected fragility to the surface coating, and as you said, you did not advise them not to wash your atypical car. I am also sorry this happened to you, but they have no obligations in this situation.

I'm assuming autodip is like plastidip?
Not sure about what their response would be, but
I would have them give me some free stuff from the parts department and redip the wheels myself.

It is to an extent but it is a lot nicer finish. This is what it looked like prior to dealer visit

I would have them powder coated if it wasn't a lease!

Thanks for the replies, it's about what I thought. Probably SOL. Looks like I'll be busy this weekend.

Is auto-dip less durable than plasti-dip? I was under the impression that plasti-dip would last until you peeled it off. Granted, in that "before" picture your wheels look amazing. Maybe they did pressure wash the wheels and maybe plasti-dip wouldn't stand up to that either. But you would think it should be able to stand up that...

If the car wash guy at the dealer did reach for the pressure wash, thinking he was about to do a good job to get the wheels clean, imagine the look on his face when the surface peeled off!

It was really durable, it must have been high pressure. Not sure what happened.

I'm going to touch them up and see how they look.

High-pressure hoses, I understand why dealerships use them to clean wheels and get stuff off paint, however, they really are damaging and tire companies have warned against maintaining a high pressure spray against the sidewalk of a tire - the pulse strength and temperature of high concentrate pressure can disfigure the belts of the inner tire.

My bet is that the worker didn't recognize that the wheels were dipped because of the semigloss finish. Usually plasti-dip is really easy to note. That particular type is less so.

Dealerships often use a type of wheel acid to get caked on brake dust off. Also, I can tell by your picture of the rest of the wheel that you only seemed to have put 1 layer on. You need at least 3-4 layers of plasti-dip for it to look right AND for it to come off as advertised. With such a thin layer, peeling that off will take hours (ask me, I know)

So, I'm not surprised that wheel acid and/or high pressure took your dip off. Just touch it up and be done with it. It's not their fault you put don't have legitimate paint on your wheels..

This makes sense, there is a chemical all over the wheels now.

I would like to point out however. I did put 5-6 coats on each wheel as recommended.

Going to recoat this weekend.

I don't have one bit of a problem with anyone performing any type of modifications to their cars. However, I can completely understand that, from the car company's standpoint, any modifications are at your own risk. That said, I wouldn't let a dealer wash my car for anything. Forgot it once, had swirls, spent four hours polishing them out.

Glad my dealer does not wash black cars.
I also second the recommendation to get them powder coated. It cost me about $700, but it's permanent.

OP is on a lease, so powdercoating is probably not a good option.

Sorry to hear this. I did like the look though... pre wash of course!

Couldn't be much worse than the time I removed some clear bra on a new Aventador and peeled off a foot of the paint on the front of his rocker panel oh my f....x2 Oddly it had a re painted area on the front half of the rocker that stopped and was blended into the existing job that was not bonded well. He was fortunately, was taken in and covered under warranty.
