M240i stage 3 build thread

Welcome everyone to my build thread for my BMW M240i.

For those that don’t know along side my car racing I own and run a BMW tuning specialist in Shropshire called Tom Wrigley Performance.

The end goal with this car is to be running a “Stage 3” package which will include using a larger turbo, we will also be doing some cosmetic changes along the way so stay tuned. I will be using this thread to document each step and can hopefully offer some useful advice to others.

For anyone looking to tune there own car we can offer a whole range of tuning packages so please feel free to get in contact with any questions you might have.

Here are my first few pictures from collection day.

The first step on the car was to give it a good tidy up, I got my guy Alex down from AG detailing down to give the car a good going over and get the paint back up to spec. Awesome job as always! For anyone in the Shrewsbury area I highly recommend his detailing services.

So now the mods can start;

The first few mods I have done to the car are mainly cosmetic whilst I’m waiting on parts to put my tuning package together.

So I have gone for the following:

M Performance exterior body kit
M Performance gloss black grills
M Performance side decals
M Performance dry carbon interior trim kit
M Performance steering wheel

The fit and quality of these parts was unbelievable so massive credit to BMW on that, I would potentially look at upgrading the exterior parts to carbon at a later stage however it’s finding products that fit like OEM as sadly BMW don’t make full carbon exterior parts.

Some pictures.

Overall very happy with the overall look of the car now. Looking forward to moving onto some power upgrades now.

This looks awesome. I'm interested in what is possible on pump gas only (no meth). Is meth required for upgraded turbos?

The next step is to upload the Bootmod3 software uploaded so we can tune it.

For those of you that don’t know bootmod3 is a relatively new tuning platform and works incredibly well on the latest BMW’s. We are an official UK agent for it and can supply anyone looking for a license.

For anyone with any questions please feel free to contact me.

I will be taking the car straight to Stage 2 which includes our catless 4.5 inch downpipe, ITG panel filter and a Bootmod3 OTS stage 2 map. However I will test the Stage 1 map also using DRAGY GPS verified software to show the improvement from stock in real word conditions on the road the tests I use will be 0-100kph and a 100-200kph.

Stock testing

0-100 kph = 4.41
100-200 kph = 11.02

———————————————————————————————————————

Another small update on the interior, I couldn’t resist completing the interior with the remaining M Performance parts I was missing so I now have the handbrake handle and gaiter and also the alcantara and carbon arm rest.

Finishes things off nicely, just the seats left to do now.

———————————————————————————————————————

Another subtle interior mod, AWRON gauge.

Sick build and looking forward to seeing your cars progress. As is, your car is freaking nuts. I saw your 100-200kmh times are now in the 6s which is redonks.

Offtopic, but does anyone know what the part number is for the fin inserts for the lower grille? I have a 2019 m240i xdrive M Performance Edition, but the American version never got the fin inserts and I would like to add them.

Next up with the weather finally improving I got to test the maps.

Stage 1

This stage 1 package includes:
* Bootmod3 stage 1 ECU re map

Results
0-100 kph = 4.30
100-200 kph = 8.72

Stage 2

This stage 2 package includes :
* Catless 4.5 inch downpipe
* ITG uprated panel filter but retaining the standard air box
* Bootmod3 stage 2 ECU re map

Results
0-100 kph = 4.25
100-200 kph = 8.40

As you can see from these result is absolutely amazing how well the B58 engine in the x40i range responds to tuning, for a relatively low investment you will be getting some absolutely awesome real world performance.

To give you an example a stock F80 M3 will do 100-200kph in 9 seconds a Stage 1 f80 M3 will be around 7.8/8 seconds so this show how fast a Stage 2 m140/m240i can be.

The next step in the journey is a tweak on our stage 2 package, for this we will be writing a full custom file. The tuner I use for all my custom mapping is Paul Johnson (f80paul), Paul has extensive knowledge when it comes to tuning BMW’s and his tunes have become world renowned.

Me and Paul have been working together for a while now and last month we took another step forward together which has meant he has now appointed me as his official home for Paul Johnson tunes in the UK. So far we have achieved some awesome result in the M2c / M3 and M4 S55 world with my own F80 M3 claiming the S55 stock turbo UK record at 5.9 for a 100-200kph pull.

So onto the details about the custom stage 2 map.

Stage 2 custom map

This stage 2 package includes :
* Catless 4 inch downpipe.
* ITG uprated panel filter but retaining the standard air box.
* Bootmod3 licences
* Full custom live mapped Paul Johnson tune
* Optional custom exhaust burble (M4 GTS style, gunshot or flames ect)

0-100 kph = 3.99
100-200 kph = 7.89

The process for writing a custom file is quite a bit more involved than just the stage 2 Bootmod3 map. All of the tuning is still done via bootmod3 but this time the file will be specific for the car and built from the ground up. First Paul will send me over a base file to which I will flash onto the car, once this is on the car we will need to log the car so Paul can see how the car is responding this requires the car to be driven on the road accelerating through 3rd, 4th and 5th gear. This data is then recorded and Paul can view and make changes to suit the car, this processes is then repeated until we have the perfect tune for the car.

The main advantage of live mapping the car on the road is that you can map the car in real world conditions everyone loves a nice dyno figure however I like to ensure that with the power increase you are still able to use it all on the road and get the most out of the car.

Another cool feature I have chosen on my car is the gunshot/flame exhaust burble, although it’s not everyone’s cup of tea I’m really enjoying it. With ALL of my tuning packages you have the option to choose your style of exhaust burbles to suit your personal tastes weather that be no burbles, mild or full on aggressive we have all angles covered.

With the car performing nicely now I am going too to complete a few chassis and styling changes in the coming weeks.

M Performance LSD
MSS springs
Methanol injection kit
XHP gearbox map

———————————————————————————————————————

Next up is methanol injection, I wanted to create at kit that’s totally standalone so it didn’t need a JB4 or anything else to run it.

So I’ve gone for the following:
BMS meth tank
BMW spacer plate
Snow performance pump
Twin BM7 nozzles
Torqbyte CM5 controller

The install was relatively simple, I’m well familiar with meth installs on the S55 and the install on this was much the same.

I will also be creating a fresh custom map with Paul for this setup.

Some pictures of the install

———————————————————————————————————————

So I have had chance to work on the custom pump fuel + methanol map with Paul over the last few days and we have got things dialled in nicely.

With the map 95% complete it’s performing absolutely awesome and achieving some incredible dragy times, with the car in current trim it’s consistently producing low 7 100-200 times. We have a few more things to try could it break into the 6s? I’m looking forward to finding out.

I also did a quick 1/4 mile test.

Holy shit. You’re trapping 100 in the 1/8 and 125 in the 1/4 on the stock turbo! Get that 60’ down in the low 1.80’s and you’ll be running 11.30’s. XHP flash might shave a couple tenths as well. So no e85 on the Paul Johnson tune then? I may consider one of his custom files after seeing this. I’m BM3 Stage 2, catless, intake, M-Performance LSD. Planning on dong the xHP flash in a couple weeks.

Now that I’m happy with how the car is performing I will be tuning my attention to the handling side of things, I have the following parts to fit:

M performance LSD
This is a modification I’ve been really excited for, coming from M cars and Porsche’s I’ve felt this was something that was really missing from the M240i so I’m really looking forward to seeing how this improves the car.

MSS height adjustable springs
This is another aspect of the m240i which I feel can be improved. I feel the stock suspension is far to soft and I do find the car wallowing around on a spirited drive however I don’t want to ruin the ride quality of the car.

So introducing the MSS spring kit which should be the perfect solution. These kits are nothing short of epic and allow you to keep the stock shock absorbers but offer an fully height adjustable spring. My relationship with MSS goes a long way back after they transformed the handling on my RS3. Since then we have worked closely together and last year they were my full sponsor for my Porsche Carrera Cup season. So I’m really excited to get this fitted.

M3/4 Front Wishbones
After doing some research and seeing it’s been done a few times before I thought i would give them a go. I had read it adds up to 1 degree of camber so I’m really looking forward to how this works alongside the MSS Kit

Custom Signature Wheels
Due to me really struggling to find some wheels I like and will fit the car with prope tyre sizes on I have gone down the custom route. I have chosen some Signature Forged SV104 wheels 19 x 8 ET45 (245/35/19 MP4S tyres) and 19 x 9 ET55 (265/35/19 MP4S tyres) this setup should allow me to run proper tyres sizes. They will take around 5/6 weeks to come but I’m super excited.

How things are currently looking

Looking forward to your impressions of the MSS kit (Street/Sport/Track?) I had them on my MKV VW R32 and they were more compliant than the stock springs and the car felt better controlled in corners (less lean) and it reduced the understeer significantly (the VR6 over the front axle resulted in a far from 50/50 balance). Just got an email stating they are done R&Ding the kit and it is ready for purchase. Now only need to decide if I want to keep the car (lease runs out in 9 month)

So far I'm absolutely loving them, I've had them on lots of my past cars and have enjoyed the sporty feel they offer without compromising on ride quality.

Which set up did you go for? Street? Sport? ...? And do you have the adjustive dampers stock or are you on fixed/regular dampers?

What happened to the white M240i? It turned grey (and is making insane power)!

How much of a difference did swapping the control arms make for you? Also thoughts on M LSD vs third party?
