Upgrade suspension: where to start
I have a 2015 M235i xDrive as my daily commute car and I'm exploring the options to tighten up the suspension a little more; esp. at the Comfort Mode.
Will be replacing the run-flat ties with Michelin (PILOT SPORT A/S 3+ 245/35ZR18) this Saturday. I'm new to suspension replacement. Where do I start? Please advise. Thanks!

Depends on your budget. Springs (I use Dinan) will be a good place to start, and the cheapest option. If you track the car as well, anti-roll bars are helpful but costly to install. If you want adjustability go with coilivers, which will be even more expensive. If you want wider tires up front, and don't want to eat through them on the track, camber plates are helpful, but will clunk around a lot.

I run the TCKline double adjustable coilovers (600/800) and i love them on and off track. You can also spec them with softer springs if you want

Quality struts and shocks are the most important. If you are on a budget, start there.
If you can only afford to do the springs, save up and get compatible struts and shocks go with with the springs. |

All these stiffening up of the shocks and struts sound exciting and viable but I have a nagging question: wouldn't a stiffer suspension puts more stress on the sub-frame mounts? The original subframe mounts weren't designed for a significantly stiff suspension.
More stress on the subframe mounts means higher chance of tearing/cracking the mounts and vicinity area? What are your thought for running these stiffeners over the long-haul?

Have a look at TC Kline kits. They run lower rates than most and still achieve the same or better results. PM us if you have specific questions. |

The only strut that I think may be more or less performance oriented may be the EDC-compatible version of Biltsein B6. I haven't used them on m235i so it's just a guess based on my experience with them on other cars. I would suggest go for the KW DDC Plug & Play coilovers (https://www.kwsuspensions.net/produc...8/DDC/39020023), and skip the strut & spring solutions (none of which are perfect). That's what I have after various experiments with springs. Way better. So much better, in fact. A perfectly matched setup. It will give you a much tighter feel and better handling. Comfortable, too. The lowering is as advertised. I am about - 30 mm in the front and about -25 mm in the rear. The car does look a bit slammed after stock and some lowering springs but the body is so much better controlled. I used to scratch my front bumper on various speed bumps and stuff with less lowering using lowering springs and surprisingly it no longer happens with the KW suspension even though it's noticeably lower. It's pricey but now I believe it's actually worth it. Last edited by x233; 06-28-2019 at 04:40 PM.. |
