Burning Oil?

Got a message on i-drive saying engine oil was at lowest operating point and to add a quart asap. Anyone else seen this? Common n55 thing? The car has 5500 miles on it. Should I be concerned?

Did you add oil right away? Or did you take additional oil readings to verify?
HOW MUCH OIL DID YOU ADD?

Before you even think about getting concerned, have an oil change - new filter proper BMW oil.

Then mention to service department at visit to note down your needing to add oil and at the mileage.

I have not added oil yet. It came on last night and I drove it this morning and it came on again. I'm just gonna let the dealer add the oil.

I wouldn't wait to long to add oil. Not only lubrication but oil also acts as a coolant particularly with turbo-charging.
You can use iDrive to measure oil / it would just be a verification to the automatic reading while driving.
Your warranty book list oils you can use to top off if you can't find the BMW oil.

Just out of curiosity, do you encounter a lot of idling in back-ups or extended high-speed driving ?

Yea I know the importance of having enough oil in the engine, but I'm more just asking if others have encountered this warning/issue. I havn't heard of this type of thing with the n55. I drive the car as it should be driven, but not for any extended period of time. I have about 40 minute commute other than that just local driving.

I understand - there have been at least one other oil usage thread on the 2-series forum.

The reason I asked about stop&go traffic or high-speed is to develop a database if other's have similar post in the future.

I'm going to search through other models to read if similar oil usage threads were posted.

Why would you need an oil change because of this?

Oil consumption is not uncommon, especially on a new car.

In order to get an accurate reading you should always check the oil on level ground with the engine fully warmed up. The best would probably be in your parking spot after you get home.

If you check the oil while driving it could fluctuate and give you different readings.

If the e dipstick reads 1/2, 3/4 qt empty you don't need to add any oil, just wait for the add 1qt oil warning. That is the simplest and easiest way.

You don't need an oil change because you needed to add a quart of oil.
But before you conclude that your car is using a certain amount of oil / miles, do at least one oil change ( either initial early change out or whatever mileage one chooses ) before you determine you've got an engine that uses oil/mile.

I experienced a similar occurrence with my (N55) 135i. Its most likely because it is a new engine and you are (probably) driving it hard. Hard driving burns oil, especially in a new engine. Add a quart (or have your dealer do it - it will be covered under warranty) and drive on. You don't need an oil change - just some more oil.

Its not covered under BMW warranty. Maintenance plan only covers oil changes at the prescribed intervals determined by the vehicle CBS data. Engine oil "top off" between oil changes is at the owners or dealers expense.

thanks everyone for the feedback, just wanted to make sure it was no major problem. I have definitely been enjoying the car. The dealer is taking care of it on tuesday so I'll just take it easy until then.
