I had one of the new 3 series over a weekend while they took 3 days to change the oil in my M240i and while I appreciated that the driving dynamics were much more BMW like than the previous generation, I really HATED the digital gauges. There was WAY too much crap trying to be displayed there and no way to turn it all off.

To give it a try, I used the BMW navigation, which I don't usually use. So I have turn directions showing up THREE different places: the navigation screen, where you want it to be, between the speedo and tach, and in the heads up display. You can turn off the heads up, which I did, but basically if you want to remove all the extraneous crap from the gauges you are out of luck.

Worst of all was all the stuff they want to put in the middle of the "Rev Counter". This gauge cluster assumes that everyone will be driving an automatic and a tach is completely vestigial at this point.

It's my hope that by the time they get around to making the new 2 that there will have been a refresh of this cluster and they'll fix some of the stupider things about it.

In the 3 configurator, as least with the base 330 model, the default option is a regular instrument cluster with dials. But if you want the larger iDrive screen you get stuck with the digital dash.

Your guess is as good as mines until either one can confirm it but if I was a betting man, my money would be on a tuned B58 for the next M2. Let's leave it at that.
I'm hoping this is the case. The S58 is a monster in the X3Mc I drove at the M track day, but it takes a little bit to wake up. For non-track duty, I'd much prefer the mesa-flat torque curve just off idle from the B58.

Not to mention the price point of the OG M2 was in a perfect position (at least for me), I want to see it back!

Any new rumors about whether the G42 will have an I6? I know ynguldyn has the Future BMW Model Info post, but the comment about the the G42 only having the B48 motor was from July 2018.
