hello all, made the journey here from e46fanatics as i've upgraded from my e46.
couldn't be happier. i have all the service records from bmw for it, but nothing regarding modifications.
my question is whether my gas mileage is normal. car is a 2014 m235i 6MT, just under 36,000 miles. i usually drive in town (no freeways where i live) and the gas mileage average in the instrument cluster reads 19.4 mpg which is around the same as my e46 (330ci 5MT).
i've been driving it "responsibly" (under 4000 rpm, no hard launches etc) for this current tank of gas because i was getting the feeling the gas mileage wasnt as good as my e46, which i expected, but not to the degree i was noticing
we only have 91 octane here, and i would get around 330-350 miles to the tank in my e46. with the m235, so far ive gotten about 175 miles, and i've got a little over a 1/4 left. my estimate is when this tank is almost gone i'll probably get around 225 miles out of it.
i realize the m235 would get less mpg's compared to the e46 due to the increased hp the m235 has. is this mpg comprable to what others get?
as far as i know the car is stock, but im not 100% sure.

quick unrelated question, the button above the start stop for the engine cut off at idle is always off when i start my car. saw a f30 video that said to have it always off it needs to be coded like that. is that the case with the m235i also or has mines been coded

i have like 7300 miles on my m240 and i got 16.4 mpg last tank. Best ive ever done is like 25 mpg. Im nothing crazy on it but just cant seem to extract great mileage out of this car.

The start stop button remembers the last setting on my car. so if its on, itll stay on next time the car turns on, if its off itll stay off hte next time you start it. However its never on in sport + on my car at least.

Your mileage is that bad?

We do have a forum on this, but the absolute most important things are to remember are

1. Accelerate briskly (up to 2500 or so RPM) to the speed limit. Do not drive like a grandma, that just wastes gas. You want to get to a steady speed in a higher gear ASAP.

2. Do not exceed the speed limit in city driving as long as you are not impeding traffic. Speeding is burning and wasting gas, nothing more.

3. Coast as long as possible to a stop. I can usually coast a full 1/4 mile from 45 MPH. Coasting will make the biggest difference in MPG than anything else.

19.4 is pure city driving with a 6mt M235 is pretty good. That's about what I see and I drive fairly aggressively. It will be hard to consistently see low 20s.

Remember:

1) Your M235 is making about 110whp/120wtq MORE than your 330ci does and it's doing it while getting the same MPG. That's progress.

2) Your M235's fuel tank is about 3.2 gallons smaller than your 330ci's.

3) The 6mt M235 is rated at 19mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

In over 5 years with my 235, I average about 20 mpg overall, with mostly suburban driving. The best I get on the highway is about 30 mpg. This is pretty close to the rating.
Of course, it all depends on your driving style. I am not very aggressive and use Sport only when there is little traffic on two-lane roads.

Same here. M235 Vert with 6 MT. I am pretty conservative and drive it more like a GT than a sports car. That said, I'll run the revs to 5500 or 6000 every once in a while. I have kept a log of gas mileage since new. Daily mix of suburban driving yields consistent 21-22 mpg and interstate cruising at 75 mph is generally 29-30 mpg. Best ever was 34 mpg on a long road trip in 50ish temps on flat roads and cruise set at 75.

MyM235i Convertible seems to yield a remarkably consistent 26-27 US MPG over the last 4 years. I can get that up a bit on very long journeys by judicious use of the EcoPro downhill coasting.

Typical range after a fill-up is around 280 miles ±20 depending on journeys preceding it.

You may find that with predominantly urban driving in the 6-cyl, you're sitting below a sort of 'Low Water Mark' where no amount of careful driving makes much difference. But if you did a few more longer trips, you'd then be in the zone where your careful driving does show more returns. (apologies, not very well expressed).

This is perhaps why you find convertible buyers sometimes cross-shop apparently odd alternatives: in my case a 218d vs a 225i - they're trying to balance a choice of very efficient, easy-to-commute-in 1.8d against a really fun and dynamic 3.0i Because the 'vert-ness' is the main factor, with engine secondary to that.

[Edit: Fuel is usually Shell V-Power 94.5 US (UK 99 RON), mainly for the claimed cleaning merits rather than performance, as this is a long-term vehicle.]

I am sport or sport + 100% of the time and average 23 - 27 mpg. 6MT. Combined city + HWY. Probably 60 / 40 HWY / City. It blows my mind some of you guys get less than 20...

Try spending some time off the highway (or on the highway in traffic). I'll average 19 for city / highway traffic, but can easily exceed 30 for all highway drives.

If I've got a good mix, I'm in the mid 20's as you are.

Thanks for the input guys, I feel more at ease that I’m getting similar mpg’s to most of you. XutvJet, I didn’t realize the e46 had that much more fuel capacity! Guess I’ll just have to fill up more often after the DP, CP, and IC get replaced with BM3.

I have only had my 2015 M235i (auto) for 6 days, but drove circa 280 miles from Wirral to Kent in the UK last week (90% motorways and A roads).

Spent probably 3/4 of the journey in Eco Pro at speed limits to test its effectiveness; the remainder was in Comfort mode with a mixture of heavy right foot / giving it the beans and 'normal' driving.

Rocked up at my destination with exactly 40.0mpg on the screen and just under 1/4 tank remaining.

Very happy with that!

If so, then that is a bit shy of 30 US, which is pretty normal for a 235.

Sorry, yes, UK MPG I was referring to. I believe 40MPG UK is around 33 US?

Very impressed, anyway. For a car with this much power, obtaining that kind of economy when required is great.

Currently I’m still on the same tank of gas, 180 miles and got a quarter tank left. Curious about the gas mileage for cars that are tuned, JB4 or BM3 stage 2.
