M240I - Just finished mod #3 - Mirror Caps

Just completed mini mod #3, replaced the mirror caps to compliment the new grill and reflector tint. Since I had a spare set of mirror caps my initial plan was to wrap them and replace the originals. I got some matte black wrap at Impact Signs and had a go at it but sweet lord that stuff is tricky to work with around the sharp edges of the caps. Then it dawned on me that Plastidip would be perfect for this job since the parts were already off the car so no taping would be required.

When I went looking for Plastidip I came across a product I never saw before called Rustoleum Peel Coat. It was way cheaper than Plastidip but only came in two colors, black or Graphite, I decided to try the Graphite. It says right on the tin to replace within 6 months but that's no big deal, I only used about $5 worth of product on both mirrors.

Once I had the caps coated (and I was impressed at how even it went on) then I had to figure out how to get the caps off the car. I watched a few videos and almost everyone removed the mirror first so that's what I tried to do using a small plastic pry tool I got at Princess Auto. After about 5 minutes I finally got the mirror off but it really felt like I was going to break the thing with the pressure I had to use to pop it off. I had an even harder time with mirror #2 so I decided to try just prying off the cap itself. The cap popped off super easy and none of the clips were damaged, I think that's what I'll do all the time now rather than fooling with the mirror. Now if these were $500 carbon fiber caps I wouldn't recommend it but with regular ones it works fine.

Anyway I think the new caps look great, I'm really considering doing the side skirts in this peel coat stuff just for a bit of fun. New grills, reflector tint and caps so far!
