Physically speaking there is no reason why you cant put a rear LSD into an AWD car. In fact the car will perform awesomely with it. Thats what the sport diff on the audi S5 does. The STI has front and rear LSD's if i am not mistaken. I imagine most awd supercars do as well though i dont actually know that. The problem you have is that xDrive makes more extensive use of the ESP system ( individual wheel breaking etc) in order to optimize awd traction that their RWD cars do. For this reason the LSD might interfere with the operation of the xdrive system. Basically you need to talk to someone with real knowledge at BMW before you try it. Also its fairly likely the front diff wont fit so rear only. |

Yes, you can. An LSD on the rear end won't interfere with the electric LSD function of the car. It's been done multiple times with no problems. BMW will install one of theirs at the VPC for you if you put it in at time of order or if you ask your dealer for it later. Pricey little sucker, though.
In order to answer "Is it worth it?", you'll need to provide more information as to what you intend to do with the car. Are you going to track it? Might be worth it in that case. Are you just planning on driving around on city streets with a set of all-seasons hoping it will help in the snow? Probably not worth it in that case. Quote:

Its something i also thought about and wondered even if possible.
I assume it is possible but i think the benefit will really only be seen on the lockup on deceleration. Locking up the rears prob wouldn't be as necessary, as the front engages when needed, unless you plan on drifting. So the only reason I would see it helping is drifting and helping understeer on deceleration. You will never feel this on the streets. Last edited by williesm; 03-31-2015 at 12:42 PM.. |

RWD and AWD M235i share the same rear differential so there is no reason that LSD cannot be installed in AWD. In the M Performance LSD press release, it was claimed that only RWD car will have the ability to be retrofitted with M Performance LSD... Maybe it's an ETK error. For example, until 2015 March edition, M Performance LSD was only available for 2TB sport auto transmission and not manual gearbox on M235i... |

OK, so has anyone actually tried installing the M Performance LSD, or any other mechanical LSD for that matter, in their m235i xDrive yet?
(hate to be the first one and learn the hard way). |

After driving my xdrive for 5 months, I can't imagine how it could improve upon the current system, especially for the $$$$ it costs.

Xdrive will try to mimic that but once a wheel starts slipping, a few ms later it will apply the brakes on that wheel and some of the torque would be pushed to the opposite wheel Similar to how the eLSD works on DSC OFF mode. Using the brakes to go faster is not the most efficient way to do it but in lack of a real lsd is probably the closest thing for preventing torque being wasted on a slipping wheel Also because the xdrive pushes power to all the axels it's less likely that you will get a slipping wheel |

Has anybody attempted this since the release of xdelete. I just went rwd and would love to put an LSD in so i can have more fun going sideways but i will want to be able to switch back and forth to awd and rwd. If i put an lsd in and it works in rwd do u think it will work in awd?
