Costco Premium fuel

Anyone in Ontario using Costco Premium gas? Ethanol free, Top Tier. Its between that and Shell V-Power Nitro for me but, obviously, Costco is a heck of a lot cheaper. Just wondering about long term use.

Also interested to hear opinions on this. I stopped using regular Costco gas because for some reason, when I put it in my snowblower and leaf blower it made my garage absolutely stink and that gave me a bad feeling about it.

Not in ontario but i used it once or twice and my m240 didnt like it. Its good if you dont push your motor alot or if youre just going around town running errands but if you like to drive spiritedly youll notice the reduced power. I tried petro canada 94 as well and thats even worse. Ive since started using husky 94 and the car loves it. But i also add a little more ethanol in my tank too coz i run jb4. But just straight up husky 94 is good in my experience

The trick is to find a Shell station close to the Costco closest to you.
I find that almost all gas stations within a few kms of the local Costco will often (at least several times per week) drop their prices approx 8 - 10 cents a liter (generally after 11am).
I've only had to pay full price for gas a couple of times in the past 2 years.

Costco premium gas is supplied by Husky. If you look at the red pump nozzle there is a small Husky logo.

The quality is good. I've been using it for 5+ years on my 135i and now on my m235i.

Costco usually gets its fuel from the closest refinery, which can differ from province to province or state to state. In Alberta, where I was in the industry, Costco used Esso (Exxon Mobile) supplied fuel, not sure if this is still the case? Additive packages are poured into the delivery truck through a top hatch and mix during transport and delivery to the designated gas station. Costco gas is good quality, and due to the high volume they pump, is probably some of the freshest gas you can buy. I personally wouldn't hesitate to fill up at Costco. Husky is the name of the company that supply the nozzles, so won't represent who supplied the fuel. I hope this helps

I don't think Costco gas is that good. My 228i gets around 2L/100km more when using Costco 91 vs Shell V Power 91

In many cases it is the same gas as you buy from Shell, depending on the region. What differs is the additive package.

Fuel consumption is not a sign of how "good" gas is. Usually if there's ethanol in the fuel your consumption will go up. However you might have better knock resistance which means you can make more power.

Costco 91 has no ethanol in it as per their pumps. It is listed as a "Top Tier" gas so they would only be getting it from a couple of suppliers if so.

And this is why i recommend an ethanol blend. Id rather have knock resistance than fuel economy

I've never tried Costco as there isn't one close to me, but Canadian Tire 91 is also ethanol free. It is just as good as Shell 91 and a few cents cheaper.
pure-gas .org is a good resource.

I try to avoid putting any variant of E10 in my M240i.

That's not the same husky logo, it's a pump handle manufacturer

Essentially you get more energy from pure gas than E10. Also E10 does reduce your mileage compared to pure gas (scientifically speaking).

There was an article I read a while back discussing the science behind it. I'm sure there is plenty out there, so I'll let you be the judge.

BMW recommends the use of super unleaded 95 RON fuel. Unleaded RON 91 fuel or higher with a maximum ethanol limit of 10 percent (E10) is also permitted.
FYI
RON 95 = 91 Octane
RON 91 = 87 Octane
I read that as, ethanol free would be recommended but E10 will work.

I'm no expert by any means and there are pro and cons for each side of the argument. So I ended up coming to the conclusion, if I'm going to put 91 in my car, I'd rather pay for pure gas rather than pay for 90% gas +10% ethanol.

Yes pure gas does have more energy than ethanol so its more efficient. Im totally on the opposite of the spectrum. Im more of a performance oriented guy and more for protecting the motor. Because ethanol is harder to combust, it inherently has better anti knock properties and the DME can adjust timing higher to take advantage of that. So essentially you can push more power and performance from the motor safely and thats why i prefer ethanol blends.

I know that ethanol gas will have worse fuel economy. But the thing is, Costco 91 gas is ethanol free, but I get worse fuel economy. That is what I am concerned about, and why I will never put any Costco gas in my car again despite that it is extremely close to my house.

I have been using Costco gas for a few months. Hard to tell if it reduces
performance(maybe a little) but my gas mileage is the same as when I was using shell ultra. No ethanol and around 20 cents cheaper. I will stick with it.
