Front tires warmer than rears

Not sure if this is the right thread, but i'll give it a shot. Hey all, I own a 2020 m240i and have noticed that my front tire temps skyrocket after "spirited driving." Car is completely stock with oem wheels and fitment. Why would my front two tires get warmer than the rears in a RWD car? Car does not have an LSD if that matters.

Mine do the same. The front wheels will build up more heat when turning at speed and also under braking. It's normal. Unless your roasting the rear tires you can expect that temp difference

Try running pressures in front that are higher (like 34 or 35psi); you'll get crisper turn in and won't chew up the tire edges as much.

Cause turning and braking generate heat and 80% of the braking is done by the front tires and unless you are drifting the rears do 0% of the turning

I was sliding the car... I tried to find an empty lot to replicate it because it rained recently. Front tires make a noise almost as if they're rubbing and were significantly warmer than the rears. Tried it again on a day it didn't rain and I did not hear the rubbing noise but the temperatures were hotter in the fronts again. I'm so confused because 1. I shouldn't be rubbing with a stock car so what is the noise? and 2. why aren't my rears way hotter? Any input is appreciated.

If you turn the steering too hard and understeer, you are scrubbing speed off with the front tires, essentially skidding them. That will make a noise and rapidly build up heat in the tires. Is that what you are doing?

That 'rubbing' is most likely tire scrub, where a lot of the heat comes from. Try the higher pressures in a back-to-back to see how much diff it actually makes.

Thanks a lot for the replies! Any reason I experience this more in the wet? Or does it have to do with it being cold out?

DK if it is really answering 'why' but they just published an article in C&D about how Porsche uses acoustical sensors in the wheelwell to determine if road is wet or dry, so it isn't just you noticing the difference.

Not to throw out the obvious: but did you reset your TMPS system since the last time you rotated your tires? Maybe iDrive has your fronts and rears backwards

What effect would that have on how hot the tires feel?

I assume he's getting the tire temp from the TMPS monitors inside each tire on his iDrive screen, and not putting his hand on the tire after a run.

The 2 series shows the air temperature of the tires? That is interesting, I'll have to check that out this afternoon.

I thought that was normal since the engine is closer to the front tires.

I'm not sure about the year breakdown, but I think 2017+ F series will show the tire temp as long as its turned on as an option in iDrive. Before 2017 you might have to turn it on by coding.

I run my front and rear tire pressures at 35psi +/-. I find that everything Maynard wrote is the same with mine especially with better turn-in response. I find the tire temps are more equal on all four corners.
