Switching wheels and tires

Howdy boys and girls,

I have a 2018 230xi with 225 40r 18'' tires & wheels and I've gone through 5 tires already and have 4 bent rims. I've never had this issue with the 4 other BMW's that I've had. I figure it's because of the low profile wheels and run flats.

I consider myself a careful driver but every now and then a pothole arises out of nowhere and that is really what has caused the rips and bubbles in the aforementioned tires and bent wheels.

I'm about fed up at this point and considering purchasing 4 non run flats and downgrading to 17'' wheels from Tirerack in hopes that it will help to mitigate issues and if I hit a damn pot hole it won't cause immediate damage.

My question is -- is it worth it? Will I have more "protection" when hitting a pothole versus the 18'' and run flats?

Thanks!

17 inch wheels with taller sidewalk make it more resilient but still susceptible.

Really important not to b on the brakes as you hit a pothole.
Sometimes just a tire like Michelin A/S 3+ make enough difference on their own, but, sometimes not.

Most potholes can be avoided, make sure you pay attention to the road.

Thanks but I disagree. I said that I do avoid them but some things (like accidents) are unavoidable. I live in NJ and the road is riddled with potholes. Sometime it's impossible to avoid them for any number of reasons.

I was looking more for technical advice on whether downgrading to a smaller size and non runflat would help with the tire integrity, not driving capabilities, but thanks.

Thanks.

Since I don't have tire and wheel protection from BMW I also liked the fact that the Tirerack tires have the road hazard warranty.

Yes an upgrade to 17" wheels will help, and an upgrade to a state with better roads might be in order too.

My 2017 230 has 45,000 Michigan miles and no damage to the wheels and tires. Been lucky with the potholes. Now going into our third winter, fingers crossed.
