How does this improve the displayed information?

Hiya,

Coming to this late as I just got an 118D sport.

Fantastic, simple mod which I will have to add to my list too. And well illustrated too. Makes all the difference.

A query though. How does the appearance of the screens change on the larger display? Are they the 6.5 screens stretched or does the system sense the bigger screen and show different information (i.e. more split screens, more data).

Anyone who has done this mod (particularly with Nav) able to upload a few screenshots of the differences?

Thanks Guys.

I don't have pictures right now (you can look at the OPs), but the car will adjust to the larger screen resolution so it will look the same as a car that came with the 8.8" screen stock, minus the navigation menus. There is no stretching or anything.

Your technically supposed to code the car to let it know a bigger screen was installed, but in my case I found that I didn't even need to do that as the option was already set to the larger screen.

In the coding the two entries you say to change are:
HU_NBT > 3000 HMI > DISPLAY_SIZE_RESOLUTION = 8.8_1280x480
HU_NBT > 3001 EXBOX > DISPLAY_VARIANTE = breites_display

But when I go online with my car the entries I have are:
HU_ENTRY > 3000 HMI > DISPLAY_SIZE_RESOLUTION = 8.8_1280x480
HU_ENTRY > 3001 EXBOX > DISPLAY_VARIANTE = breites_display

But it still doesn't work. In the original post it said you need HU_ENTRY so I'm wondering if anyone could shed some light on this for me.

When you start the car you can hear the radio and stuff, it's just the screen not displaying anything.

I had the same issue as you, I think I was getting a message that said 'no connection' or something like that.

Turned out the wire wasn't connected to the screen properly. Just double check the wire and make sure its plugged all the way in, and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the advice but I eventually got it working, I had bought the wrong screen, because of my head unit configuration etc I noticed my existing smaller screen had "L7 Mid" on it, I swapped it with an "L7 High" screen and it works excellently.

I'm guessing L7 is logic 7 I did post some pictures on this thread somewhere of it working

Does the display with the different backplate from the F30 wiggle or rattle at all after install?

F22 displays are so much more expensive online...

No doesn't rattle or anything , I used a f30 back plate for a almost year without any problem, if it's not going to bother you having a small gap I'd go with the f30 screen

Anderw Thanks for the reply.

Since the gap is in the rear of the display and totally unnoticeable I feel like it's no brainer to go with the f30 display.

Just a few updates some might find useful:

- You can code the retrofit through the BimmerCode app in expert mode. Very easy. Good option for those not comfortable with eSys.

- Touch Controller basic functionalities are plug and play. However even through coding I wasn't able to make the touch functionality work. Not sure if missing something, hardware is incompatible or ID version is not the right one

- Be careful with the clips under the screen. I lost one of them in the dashboard. Hard to find.

That's still cheaper than some f22 screens I've seen on eBay.

It looks like a great article you posted and my sister would be interested in updating as you have. Unfortunately it seems that photo bucket is an issue displaying your instruction pictures, not sure if it's them or me is the problem (I am a senior citizen). Is there any chance of obtaining these pictures by reposting w/o photo bucket or a different source?

This is my screen, can anyone tell me if it will work on mine? The right product code for this would be greatly appreciated as I've found half a dozen different ones online. I'm ok with with f30 8.8 or f22 RHD 8.8

Just did this upgrade. Great improvement over the old screen. Very easy with Bimmercode and the right parts. Thanks to Anderw for working this out for the rest of us!
