Full Screen Car Play standard now?

Hey all,
I bought a 2021 M240 last fall, and my wife has 2020 X2. In both cars, Car Play only fills up half the screen. I believe both cars come with same iDrive version; neither are live cockpit.

I've seen the options across the forum to code the fullscreen. However, I came across the following over on the X1 forum:

https://f48.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1749892&page=4

It looks like on the X1/X2, this is now supported by the latest firmware. Wasn't sure if anyone with a newer firmware had noticed this for our system yet.

My system is running:
Telephone: TB-007.020.010
Media: MB-007.020.010

Mine was built in Jan 21... still no full screen. It looked super cheesy on the half screen. I just coded full screen yesterday using the tools from kubax86 and it looks and works great.

Ahhh so a little research into this. This doesnt seem to be tied to the Telephone or Media version, but the firmware (istep) on the headunit itself? Now to do another deepdive. lol

So, to circle back on this, does anyone know what the current iStep version is for our cars?

I pulled my iStep using the following:
https://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...G8dhRvxbAVFtOY

It shows my 21's F22 iStep being:
F020-20-07-525 (July 2020)

My wife's 2020 X2 is:
F056-20-07-545 (July 2020)

I'm guessing its the Nov. 2020 build that enables the full screen carplay, but I'm not entirely sure.

I don't know. My build date is 11-23-20 and I had to have it hacked for full screen

You can export the driver profile to a USB drive. If you open the file, it has the iStep version in it. Not sure if there is an easier way.

I think if you have a July iStep build, you can toggle a flag to enable full screen. However, one of the later builds, enabled full screen Car Play by default. Im guessing they added the full-screen capability for it in an earlier build, but toggled it on in a future release.

Kubax already helped me with full screen, but FWIW my istep version is F020-20-11-520 and full screen wasn't a default option. Perhaps I could have just enabled with the BimmerCode full screen toggle, but I can't test that now.

Thanks for checking. Im going to take my wife's car in for an iStep update. I believe they have the same iDrive setup.

Will report back.

20-11 can’t just toggle it. It needs patching

Is there a site that publishes the the release notes for the iStep versions? Still trying to figure this all out lol.

I reached out to someone with a new X2, and their car came with full screen CarPlay; they werent able to confirm their iStep version though. Im starting to guess that maybe its just X2 its enabled for on the newer firmwares.

Had my 2021 full screen activation done by kubax86. Very happy with the results.

Not to keep bumping this up, but I think the software version for this may be the March 2021 version; I think this may be F020-21-03-530 (4.28.3x+) for us but I'm not entirely sure. I keep finding references of new BMWs with the same iDrive as us (X1/X2, Minis, M2) that are arriving from the factory with full screen Car Play.

I did reach out to my dealer about the iStep update, and they mentioned it was like $200. I may wait til the July release to update. From my understanding, they release March, July, and November.

Took delivery of my F87 M2c last Friday. Build date was 3/16. I got lucky, I have fullscreen CarPlay. Others in the M2c forum have also reported that their recent builds were coming with it.

Interesting to hear!

European Auto Source updated my iDrive late April 2021 and it did not automatically enable full-screen CarPlay.

However, this update made it possible to enable the feature via bimmercode. Prior to the update, the bimmercode setting did not enable full screen CarPlay when selected.

Can you share a pic of music playing? I'm wondering if the orientation of various elements is better laid out on the "official" full screen. The "hacked" version seems to push controls weirdly low. It's probably just the default for our resolution, but I was curious.

Edit: You can hopefully see in my attachments where the controls are now and where I think they should be aesthetically.

By chance, could you pull your iStep version (it can be copied to a USB drive)? I think Bimmercode also has the ability to display it. I'm guessing it's March 2021, but would be curious to see what you have.

Here's how mine looks. It appears to be more spread out while yours looks condensed toward the bottom.
