Head Gasket

Blown Head Gasket?
2017 M240i with 50,500 miles. Many bolt on mods. Stock turbo. Dinan tune. Car was at idol for about 15 minutes. Heard a loud whistle sound. Less than 5 minutes later heavy white and gray smoke pouring out of tail pipes. Any ideas?

Sounds more like a blown turbo than headgasket, with coolant and oil leaking past the bearings, as you don't normally get any noise with a blown headgasket. Could also be the intake charge cooler, too, which is a known failure area.

Some people have had valve cover failures after long idling. I think it's more PCV related than the actual cover.

How's the coolant looking?

Did you ever figure out what this issue was?? My 17 M240 just did the exact same thing last week.

I just put the ross racing occ/ pcv delete kit on the other week, motivated by this exact fear.
Mine is a 2017 with 61k
Diaphragm looked suspect when I took it out.
A little tugging on it and it ripped too easy.
Did this in prep for a drag race night as I knew it would be long stop and go idling in the staging lane.
I definitely suggest everyone consider this somehow in their routine maintenance.
At least refresh the diaphragm at a minimum

Specific for the gen 1 b58 2016-2020ish
I'm pretty sure the TU engine has an entirely different valve cover and ventilation system.
If it's a weakness still?... hopefully one of the TU guys jump in and confirm.

Given your mileage, it sounds like the PCV. It's a thin membrane that gets brittle and breaks over time.

I had the same issue. Google up B58 PCV diaphragm replacement and do it; solved the problem for me. Only hard part is prying the cap off if you want to reuse it. Otherwise, much faster to just break it off and snap on a new one.

Idling in the tech lanes at the 1/4 mile strip for 2 hours is what did mine in. 54k miles. Wish I had known about the pcv issues beforehand.

You can delete the OEM cap all together and have it vent to atmosphere. I bought the basic one with no catch can.

It may not be emissions compliant.

Correct. I dont have inspections in my state, forgot all about that. Its easy to remove put the oem cap back on for testing if someone wanted to go that route.
