Here's an interesting read. The takeaway was that the recommended intervals are fine only under normal operating conditions.

http://www.europeanautotech.net/tech.../engine-sludge

There's as much to be found online advocating more frequent intervals as there is for advocating extending the intervals. So, for someone who spends a lot of money on their car and plans to keep it for the long run, who cares if they choose to spend a few extra bucks here and there on extra oil changes. I don't since I will no longer keep a car to 100 or 200k+ miles, but can definitely understand why people would.

Just picked up my M235i on Wednesday. While in with the Finance guy, he said to make sure not to miss the 1200 mile service, as it was a key first maintenance step for "M" cars.

We all know different dealers have different approaches - mine is also a Dinan dealer, and seems they are not screwing around - nice to see.

Got my paper with the 1200 miles service yesterday. Was told it should be used in the US and not Germany. We'll see.

Another forum member got told by my dealer that they are no longer doing free 1,200 miles service. Too bad. Today if my M235i turned 1,200 miles I would pay for an oil change.

I think it's $80 assuming you didn't add the LSD which also needs a fluid change. In any event I got mine paid for but would agree, $80 is nothing for a little extra peace of mind.

So how do I go about doing the free maintenance? Do I simply call the dealer and set up an appointment? How do I make sure that it's covered.

I'm doing it anyway. I'm also not changing my oil as long as BMW quotes. It's way too long, needs to be sooner as I've seen it cause sludge build up later on.

Darn. I didn't see the paper about the 1200 mile service until I got home from Euro Delivery. The paper says I can get it done in the states too but it looks like it's a hit and miss, depending on the dealer. I guess I will try to get it be complimentary. If not, I will just pay to have it serviced just to be sure.

tried that, my dealer said every ED car gets that letter so no go unless it's a true M car.

I also emailed BMW ED department. According to them, you would get reimbursed if you did it in Europe.

I was at my local Eurowerks getting some work done on my son's E93 335 today and they changed the oil on a M235 (not mine) and found no metal shavings in the filter. They actually cut the filter apart and showed me so please don't everyone keep using that as a reason as why you need a 1,200 mile oil change. They basically convinced me I don't need it on my M235 and these guys service a ton of BMW's, Porsche's and Mercedes.

ah ha! The old medal shavings bit! I think folks Dads tell them that bit and folks carry it for life. If the book does not tell you to do it...it does not need to be done. Does not matter what car it is some folks just like spending money unnecessarily thinking they a taking care of the car. It does not hurt, but is usually not needed.

It is for cars with M engines. M235 doesn't have an M engine. Not for regular engines like ours. Generic owner's manual info applies to lots of models but not everything (like the 1,200 mi break-in period) applies to all models.

That said, I will pay for it if the dealer doesn't cover it just because I believe it to be a safe practice...

I believe the free 1200 service is not dependent on whether or not you have a M motor but rather if you have a M car. I don't believe M performance or M sport cars get the free service.

If you really want to know whether or not it's necessary to change your oil at 5k, get a blackstone oil analysis. Personally I go about 7500 on synthetic and 5k on dino oil before changing.

So I brought my car in for the complimentary 1,200 miles break-in service today. They didn't change the oil though. They pretty much only performed the multi point inspection. Another dealer when I first called to make an appointment said they would flush out some fluids which sounded strange to me. Anyhow, the "service" didn't cost anything but I thought they would change then oil. I suppose I can do that at 5,000 miles.
