Navigation with iDrive 5 - Zoom level
How can I change the settings for the zoom level? The nav system wants to show me my full route, fully zoomed out. I prefer to have it zoomed a little closer. I didn't have this issue in my F30 but can't figure out why this new nav system auto zooms out every 20 seconds after I zoom in.

When I zoom in with the wheel, it zooms out to an auto zoom level after 20 seconds. This is the reason I am reaching out to see if someone else knows how to fix this issue. My last car didn't have this problem.

I think the zoom is dynamic and sets the zoom level based on speed and how close you are to the next turn/direction. If you are not experiencing this dynamic zoom behaviour with your Nav, then your Nav View may be set to view the entire route. The Nav View setting can be changed through the iDrive - with the Navigation panel active, move the iDrive controller to the left and scroll down to View and select. Different View options will be displayed. Scroll down to select the zoom configuration of interest. If it is more an issue that the Nav automatically zooms out to far for what you want, I think there is also a way to FDL code the maximum the Nav zooms out by changing: 3000 HMI --> RANGE_MAX --> select one of 200, 300, 600, 700, 800, 900, 1000, 1200. I believe the values represents the zoom scale. Note I have not yet tested this FDL coding to confirm. Larry

I had a loaner X5 the other day that did this. Didn't dig into it too much to tell you the exact sub menu but there's an auto zoom feature you can disable.

To reiterate larrylam646's comment, to change the map view according to how I think you'd want it you'll have to move the idrive knob left - scroll down to "Map views" and select "Manual zoom." This will stop the auto zooming, but every time you want to change the zoom level, you'll have to spin the idrive knob accordingly.
I also found the auto zoom annoying too until I realized the algorithm they use for auto zooming. I don't think it's related at all to speed. Instead, the next turn/direction is always a point in the center of the map. As you get closer, the zoom adjusts to accommodate the shorter distance, hence changing zoom level. For some reason, this gave me comfort and I just left the auto zoom on. |
