Radar detector. Yes/No?

So I've been thinking of getting one. If I do, I definitely want one that filters out lane change radars on other cars. So I was looking at the Escort max 360, it's about $600-650. So thats a little bit money... Looking for some thoughts from you guys.

Glad you got one?

I have a Passport Max, same as the 360 without the rear antenna and the bluetooth link. I love it. Built in gps learns where false alarms are and filters them out. Range seems very good. If you don't need all the extras these are discontinued and sell new in the $200s.

I have a redline that I picked just bc of minimal colors but get it you'll love it. Any of the modern escorts redline on up are awesome. eBay escort mount there's one with 3m adhesive for like $10, that and mirror tap and you're good to go.

I would never do any serious driving without one. It's impossible to pay attention to how fast you're going sometimes with no traffic you can creep up on 90 on the turnpike and think you're doing 70.

Valentine one is really good. It comes with lane departure filter enabled now.

It gives warning with a lot of time in advance. It's worth every penny $399

That's the one Herr Roy runs. And it's performance is top notch. Just so damn ugly though.

Yeah. It's the same design as 15 years ago lol. Advantage is that you can ship the radar back and they will update it to the latest software

But the arrow and boogie count system is really cool

Garage List
2017 BMW M240i  [10.00]
I went through all the machinations with dash-mounted verses grill mount and compared brands and models, etc., but after doing a bunch of research I came to the conclusion that in my area (greater Atlanta) if you are not running both a laser jammer system and a radar detector don't bother because cops run laser here as much or more than radar. And unless you're ready to plunk down $2k-$3k for both, it's a non-starter. So, I'd suggest doing that research first because I wouldn't want you to get lured into a false sense of security with a radar detector when the primary threat in your area is laser, speaking hypothetically. Also, keep in mind most good radar detectors pick-up laser, but by then it's too late, you've already been pinched (hence the need for jammers which are legal in most states, but another thing to check on).

Yeah Waze is a good complement...

they could also use POP on regular Ka-band and that's similar to laser in the sense it's no constant on...
but even laser you can catch the hits from the cars ahead.... now if you are the only car in a 5 mile radius and the police is only pointing at you then you are screwed....

if you want full protection you would need radar jammer and laser jammer... but don't just pass by a cop for 20 secs while he is hitting you with the jammer on cause then you are looking for trouble.... just turn the jammer off when you get below speed level

You have to know how to to speed....

getting paced on the hghway, with SUV's, pickups, Chargers, 2017 Chevy Caprice Pursuit. It's a gamble threading though traffic.

When I'm concentrating looking at brake lights or 'he sees me I can see him' I've been lucky, it's usually when not really driving fast and doing a simple commute without a detector a cop just sitting getting read out on cars passing him that I find most often.

Mandatory equipment if you're like me and do 20-25 over pretty much everywhere.

Speed limits are set too low. Sure, grandma shouldn't be doing much more than 70 in her '75 Plymouth Gran Fury, but there's no reason for a 4 lane, divided road with no houses/businesses around (only farmland) to have a 45 mph speed limit. Cops just sit there and pull people over left and right, like a couple/three weeks ago.

Lots of great input here...

Just clarify tho, I have no desire to speed. I just dont want to be that one guy who gets a ticket for going 5-6 over because local PD needs to meet their quota for the month. I also dont want to get caught in a school zone trap, its so easy to day dream and run into one of those. The detectors i've had have saved me from that a few times.

I do like to take off from red lights, and im not doing any thing ilegal, but I don't want to draw attention to my self from the po po I didn't see.

Also a few times it picked up an emergency vehicle befor I could hear or see it.

Just add some outside input to the conversation, The Wirecutter did a review a while back of radar detectors and recommended the Valentine One and Waze, but the ROI for me just hasn't been high enough to take the $400 plunge.

Last time I had a detector was in the mid 90's... I haven't missed it but I must say WAZE is super handy.

Yep, I use both. Waze doesn't help when a cop is mobile and has his radar on, and the detector doesn't help when a cop is stationary with the gun off or is using laser. With both, I'm pretty much always aware.

I've had my Valentine V1 for about 2 years now, before I got my 2 series. It's definitely a lifesaver if you do lots of road trips - it catches radar guns from a few miles out on flat highways easily.

I have a V1 and love it, but you must remember that is only one tool in your arsenal. Situational awareness, anticipation, and plain old common sense are equally as important.
